Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) Calibration
Check Calibration At First Oil Change
Engine oil level will vary depending on angle and slant of the engine installation (angle = front to back tilt, slant = sideways tilt). The engine will be equipped with either the Traditional or the Full Range oil level gauge. It is a good idea to verify that the oil level gauge markings are correct. The most convenient time to verify the markings is when the oil is changed, preferably at the first oil change. To verify the ADD mark and to establish the actual FULL mark on the oil level gauge, use the following procedure.3306C Engine
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin.
The vehicle must be parked on a level surface to perform this maintenance procedure.
1. Operate the engine until normal operating temperature is achieved. Stop the engine. Remove the oil drain plug. Allow the oil to drain for 20 minutes.2. Remove the used oil filter(s). Install the new oil filter(s). Install the oil drain plug. Tighten the oil drain plug to 70 N m (50 10 lb ft).3. Pour 27 L (29 qt) of oil into the sump. Allow enough time for the oil to fill the sump. Approximately 20 minutes should be allowed. Check the oil level, wait a few minutes, and check the oil level again. Proceed after the oil level stops changing.4. Ensure that the oil level gauge is seated. Check the oil level on the oil level gauge. The oil level should be at the ADD mark. If the oil level is not at the existing ADD mark, grind off the mark and engrave the new ADD level, using an engraving pen.5. Pour 6 L (6 qt) of oil into the sump. Allow enough time for the oil to drain into the sump.6. Ensure that the oil level gauge is seated. Check the oil level on the oil level gauge. The oil level should be at the FULL mark. If the oil level is not at the existing FULL mark, grind off the mark and engrave the new FULL level, using an engraving pen.
If equipped with an auxiliary oil filter or system, extra oil must be added when filling the crankcase. Follow the auxiliary oil filter OEM recommendations.
7. Pour an additional 6 L (6 qt) of oil into the sump for a total fill capacity of 39 L (41 qt).
To prevent crankshaft or bearing damage, crank the engine with the fuel OFF in order to fill all of the oil filters BEFORE starting. Do Not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking again.
8. Start the engine. Operate the engine long enough to ensure that the lubrication system [including auxiliary filter(s)] is filled. Inspect for oil leaks. Stop the engine and allow enough time for the oil to drain into the sump.9. Ensure that the oil level gauge is seated. Check the oil level on the oil level gauge. If the oil level is not at the calibrated FULL mark, fill the sump to the calibrated FULL mark. Record the amount of oil added. This additional oil, plus the oil in the sump, is the lubrication system oil capacity, and the amount of oil needed for each subsequent oil change. Record the lubrication system oil capacity for future oil changes.3406C Engine

Obtain Oil Sample and Analysis
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin.
To compliment a good preventive maintenance program, Caterpillar recommends using S O S Oil Analysis at regular scheduled intervals to monitor the condition and maintenance requirements of your engine. Each oil sample should be taken when the oil is warm and well mixed to ensure that the sample is representative of the oil in the crankcase. To obtain S O S oil samples:* Use the oil sampling valve (if equipped)* Use a sampling gun inserted into the sump* Use the drain stream when changing oilCaterpillar recommends the use of an oil sampling valve (if equipped) in order to obtain samples. The quality and the consistency of the samples is better when the oil sampling valve is used. If an oil sampling valve is not equipped, the use of an oil sampling gun is preferred. If these methods are not feasible, then use the drain stream method. The drain stream method is the least preferred method because debris from the bottom of the oil sump can contaminate the sample. When using the drain stream method to obtain the oil sample, do not sample from the first or final draining. The oil at the beginning or end of the drain stream is not mixed well enough to be representative of the oil in the crankcase. For more detailed information, refer to PEHP6001, How To Take A Good Oil Sample. Consult with your Caterpillar dealer for complete information and assistance in establishing an S O S program for your engine.Engine Oil and Oil Filter(s)
Drain Oil
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin.
Do not drain oil when the engine is cold. As oil cools, suspended waste particles settle on the bottom of the crankcase or oil pan. The waste particles are not removed with the draining cold oil. Drain the crankcase with the engine stopped and the oil warm. This allows for the draining of the waste particles that are suspended in the oil.Failure to follow this recommended procedure would result in these waste particles being recirculated through your engine lubrication system with the new oil.1. The procedure to drain the oil depends upon the engine and the equipment. Drain the oil according to the following appropriate engine and equipment.* For 3306C Engines, remove one oil drain plug.* For 3406C Engines, remove the
