Information:

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: The marine transmission oil cooler for turbocharged engines is installed on the flywheel housing at the rear of the engine. See Illustration 1. The marine transmission oil cooler for naturally aspirated engines is mounted underneath the heat exchanger on the left side of the engine. See Illustration 2. The removal procedure is for turbocharged engines and for naturally aspirated engines.

Close the drain valve for the sea water.
Illustration 3 g00744997
Note: Ensure that sea water does not enter the gear box.
Remove hose connections (4) for the sea water circuit from the marine transmission oil cooler.
Mark the position of oil inlet line (9) and oil outlet line (7). Remove the oil inlet line. Remove the oil outlet line. To ensure that the level of the oil in the gear box is maintained at the correct level, the marine transmission oil cooler lines must be installed correctly.Note: Ensure that a wrench is used to prevent movement of the unions (6) when nuts (5) are removed.
Put a mark (8) across the bracket for the marine transmission oil cooler and the body of the marine transmission oil cooler. The mark will identify the correct position for assembly.
Remove bolts (2) for the brackets and remove the marine transmission oil cooler from the engine.Installation Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Illustration 4 g00745312
Clean the marine transmission oil cooler and inspect the marine transmission oil cooler. Clean the marine transmission oil cooler with a suitable cleaning fluid. If scale buildup is present inside tube bundle (10), clean the tube bundle with a 3.00 mm (0.118 inch) nylon rod. Check the marine transmission oil cooler for signs of leakage. Check the hose connections for leakage. If the tube bundle is damaged, the tube bundle must be replaced.

Align marks (8) for the bracket of the marine transmission oil cooler and the body of the marine transmission oil cooler.
Illustration 6 g00744959
Note: The inlet and outlet connections for the marine transmission oil cooler should be at 30° from the horizontal. On naturally aspirated engines, the inlet and outlet connections face the cylinder block. On turbocharged engines, the inlet and outlet connections face the rear of the engine.
Install bolts (2) that fasten the marine transmission oil cooler to the support bracket.
Connect inlet line (9) and outlet line (7). Ensure that a wrench is used to prevent movement of the unions (6) when nuts (5) are installed.
Install hoses (4) for the sea water circuit. Tighten the hose clamps.Note: On naturally aspirated engines, ensure that the marine transmission oil cooler lines do not touch the cylinder block.
Open the drain valve for the sea water circuit.
Connect the battery. Operate the engine and check for leakage in the sea water circuit. Check the marine transmission inlet and outlet oil lines for leakage.
