Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.1. Lower bucket of the machine to the floor2. Engage the parking brake.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the filler cap on the hydraulic oil tank only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Be sure all the hydraulic pressure is released before any fittings, hoses or components are loosened, tightened, removed or adjusted.
3. Release the pressure in the hydraulic systems as follows: a. Lower the implements to the ground.b. Shut off the engine.c. Move the control levers through the full range of travel. This will relieve any pressure that may be present in the implement hydraulic system.d. Move the STIC Steering Control to the "Left and Right" position. This will release any pressure that may be present in the steering system.e. Pump the brake pedal several times. This will release any pressure that may be present in the brake system.f. Carefully loosen the filler cap on the implement and brake hydraulic oil tank to release the pressure.g. Carefully loosen the filler cap on the steering and fan hydraulicoil tank to release the pressure.h. Tighten the filler caps on both hydraulic oil tanks.i. The pressure in the hydraulic systems has now been released. Lines and components can be removed.4. Drain the oil from the hydraulic oil tanks in a suitable container for storage or disposal.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
5. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly loosening the filler cap on the radiator. Drain the coolant from the radiator in a suitable container for storage or disposal.
At operating temperature, the transmission oil is hot. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant into the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334-01, SENR5664 and NEDG5065 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R-12 (C C12 F2 Dichloro Difluoro Methane) or refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh.Do not smoke while working on air conditioning systems. INHALING REFRIGERANT R-12 OR REFRIGERANT R-134A THROUGH ANY SMOKING MATERIAL, ALTHOUGH NOT TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE, CAN GENERATE LETHAL PHOSGENE GAS AND CAUSE VIOLENT ILLNESS OR DEATH. ALSO, HEAT MUST NEVER BE APPLIED TO A CHARGED SYSTEM. See Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual, Form No. SENR3334-01 and SENR5664, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
7. Recover the refrigerant from the air conditioning system. Refer to Service Manual, SENR5664, "Air Conditioning And Heating Systems With R-134a Refrigerant" and Special Publication, NEDG5065, "Air Conditioning Tools" for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to charge the air conditioning system in any Caterpillar machine. 8. Remove right panel assembly (1). (Four bolts and washers.) 9. Attach Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to panel assembly (3). Remove bolt (4), two bolts (2) (hidden) and panel assembly (3). Weight of panel assembly (3) is 43 kg (95 lb). 10. Fasten a suitable lifting device to ladder assembly (5) as shown. Remove two bolts at the top of the ladder and four bolts at the bottom. Remove ladder assembly (5) with a suitable lifting device. the weight of the ladder assembly is 109 kg (240 lb). 11. Remove left side panel assembly (6). (Four bolts and washers.) 12. Fasten Tooling (B) and a suitable lifting device to panel assembly (8). Remove bolt (7), two bolts (9) (hidden) and panel assembly (8). The weight of panel assembly (8) is 45kg (100 lb). After left side panel assemblies (6) and (8) are removed, reinstall ladder assembly (5) for access to the operator platform. 13. Disconnect electrical connection for for two flood lamps (11).
