PRODUCT SUPPORT PROGRAM FOR FLAKING OF PLASMA COATING ON TOP PISTON RING, 3406 Truck Engine, 1215, PS0244 U-12 A-8 AU-10 C-10 E-10 O-9 TT-1 Problem The 3406 Truck Engines have a plasma coated top ring on the pistons. The plasma coating was not properly bonded to the base metal on a limited quantity of the rings used in production from one supplier. The plasma coating can detach from the rings and allow unacceptable engine blowby and oil consumption. Plasma flaking can be easily seen with the naked eye. Affected Machines And New Parts Needed The 3406 Truck Engines with the following serial numbers are included in this Program: 92U55997-92U58415, 58515-63055 New Parts Needed: 6 - 1W8922 Ring Group 6 - 1W7524 Connecting Rod Bearings 1 - Gasket Kit - Top, Central, and Lower Structure ** 6 - 1W6280 Cylinder Liner * 6 - 6L5854 Cylinder Liner Band * 18 - 6V5121 Cylinder Liner Seal * 6 - 1W9372 Body Assembly (Piston) 7 - 4W5492 Crankshaft Main Bearings * * Use only if needed. ** Check engine arrangement number and parts book to determine which gasket kit to use. Action Requested If oil consumption and blowby have been a documented problem on an affected engine, replace the complete set of nickel bond connecting rod bearings with copper bond rod bearings and the rings on each piston. Inspect the cylinder liners. Replace the cylinder liners only if they do not meet reusability guidelines (SEBF8068 - Chart B, Page 12). Inspect the pistons. Replace the pistons if they do not meet reusability guidelines (SEBF8059/T.I.B.-November 21, 1984). Inspection of the main bearings will not be necessary unless the removed connecting rod bearings show distress. Cylinder liner wear can be greater with plasma coated rings than with chrome rings. This liner wear may not be an indication of plasma flaking. See T.I.B. dated April 14, 1982. Parts stock inspection of rings is not needed. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Parts Disposition U.S. And Canadian Dealers Protect the rod bearings and piston rings for shipment, and return these parts only to the Pioneer Park Claims Building, attention C. M. Berger. Be sure the bearings are taped together and numbered by cylinder number. Send the factory Service Engineering copy (black or a ligible copy) of the claim with the parts. Send the blue copy to Product Support Development in the Engine Division (Canadian AB6365), noting on this copy that the parts have been sent to the Pioneer Park Claims Building. Also, type the liner wear measurements on the claim. Dispose of the remaining parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. Other Dealers Dispose of all the former parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling. Type the liner wear measurements on the claim. Termination Date February 28, 1986.
