Table 1
J1939 Code and Description CDL Code and Description System Response
5562-1
Supplemental Fan Speed : Low - most severe (3) E1190 (3)
Supplemental Fan Speed : Low - most severe (3) The code is logged if the fan speed is not within 300 rpm of the commanded speed. On Motor Grader Applications, the code will be logged if communication for the CAN data link is lost between the Electronic Control Module (ECM) and the fan.
N/A 3548-8
Aftertreatment Cooling Fan Control Module : Abnormal Frequency, Pulse Width, or Period The code is logged if the fan speed is not within 300 rpm of the commanded speed.
N/A 3548-11
Aftertreatment Cooling Fan Control Module : Other Failure Mode The aftertreatment cooling fan is receiving low supply voltage or has failed internally.
N/A E1352 (3)
High Aftertreatment Cooling Fan Temperature The internal temperature of the aftertreatment cooling fan exceeded the maximum allowable temperature/threshold. The fan is NOT failed.
N/A 3548-5
Aftertreatment Cooling Fan Control Module : Current Below Normal The ECM has detected an open circuit on the aftertreatment cooling fan circuit.
N/A 3548-6
Aftertreatment Cooling Fan Control Module : Current Above Normal The ECM has detected a short circuit on the aftertreatment cooling fan circuit. Note: The E1352 (3) code indicates that the aftertreatment cooling fan internal temperature has exceeded the maximum threshold. The fan will shut down, and the machine should be shut down as soon as possible to avoid damage. The aftertreatment cooling fan is not failed.Note: The following schematic is used for Motor Grader Applications

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Determine the Machine
Note: The aftertreatment cooling fan is equipped only on Articulated Truck and Motor Grader applications.
Machine Application
Result: The machine is an Articulated Truck.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The machine is a Motor Grader.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
2. Inspect the Fan
A. Inspect the fan for the following conditions:
- Damaged fan blades
- Debris against the fan blades
- Air flow is obstructed
Fan
Result: The fan is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The fan is obstructed.
Repair: Remove the obstruction. Verify that the problem is resolved. Return to service.
Result: The fan is damaged.
Repair: Replace the fan. Verify that the problem is resolved.
Return to service.
3. Check for Voltage at the Fan
A. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
B. Start Engine
C. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET).
D. Perform an "ARD Ignition Test".
E. Measure the voltage between the Battery+ and Battery- on the Aftertreatment Cooling Fan connector.
Battery Voltage
Result: The voltage is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The voltage is NOT OK.
Repair: The problem is in the wiring between the fan and the battery. Check the power supply and ground to the VLPM, and the aftertreatment cooling fan relay. Repair the wiring.
Verify that the problem is resolved. If the problem is not resolved. Return to service.
4. Check for Continuity Between the Fan and the ECM
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Disconnect the 3-pin connector from the aftertreatment cooling fan.
C. Disconnect the J1 connector from the engine ECM.
D. Check for continuity between the following pins:
- Pin 3 (PWN In) on the 3-pin aftertreatment cooling fan connector and pin 31 on the J1 ECM connector.
- Pin A (Speed Feedback) on the 3-pin aftertreatment cooling fan connector and pin 1 on the J1 ECM connector.
Continuity
Result: There are less than 10 ohms of resistance on each wire.
Repair: Replace the aftertreatment cooling fan. Verify that the problem is resolved.
Result: There are more than 10 ohms of resistance on each wire.
Repair: Repair the wiring or replace the wiring. Verify that the problem is resolved.
Return to service.
5.Check for Fault Codes
A. Turn the keyswitch to ON.
B. Connect Cat ET.
C. Record the fault codes.
Codes
Result: An E1190 (3) or a 3548-8 is present.
Proceed to Test step 6.
Result: A 3548-5 or a 3548-6 is present.
Proceed to Test Step 10.
Result:A 3548-11 is present.
Proceed to Test Step 11.
Result: An E1352 (3) is present.
Proceed to Test Step 15.
6. Inspect the Fan
A. Inspect the fan for the following conditions:
- Damaged fan blades
- Debris against the fan blades
- Air flow is obstructed
Fan
Result: The fan is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: The fan is obstructed.
Repair: Remove the obstruction. Verify that the problem is resolved.
Result: The fan is damaged.
Repair: Replace the fan. Verify that the problem is resolved.
Return to service.
7. Check for Voltage at the Fan
A. Disconnect the two-pin connector to the fan.
B. Measure the voltage between pins 1 and 2 on the connector.
Battery Voltage
Result: The voltage is equal to battery voltage.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
Result: The voltage is not equal to battery voltage.
Repair: The problem is in the wiring between the fan and the battery. Check the fuse between the fan and the battery. Repair the wiring.
Return to service.
8. Check for Continuity Between the Fan and the ECM
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Disconnect the four-pin connector on the aftertreatment cooling fan.
C. Disconnect both the J1 and the J2 harness connectors from the engine ECM.
D. Check for continuity between the following pins:
- Pin 1 on the 4-pin aftertreatment cooling fan connector and pin 20 on the J1 ECM connector.
- Pin 3 on the 4-pin aftertreatment cooling fan connector and pin 12 on the J1 ECM connector.
- Pin 4 on the 4-pin aftertreatment cooling fan connector and pin 11 on the J2 ECM connector.
