Information:
Active Diagnostic Codes
An active diagnostic code represents a problem with the electronic control system. Correct this problem as soon as possible. When an active diagnostic code is generated, a display module such as the Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) may produce a warning.Logged Diagnostic Codes
When the ECM generates a diagnostic code, the ECM logs the code in permanent memory. The ECM has an internal diagnostic clock. The ECM will record the hour of the first occurrence of the diagnostic code. The ECM will record the hour of the last occurrence of the diagnostic code. The ECM will record the number of occurrences of the code. This information is a valuable indicator for troubleshooting intermittent problems. Any logged diagnostic codes will automatically be deleted if no additional occurrences are recorded in 100 hours. Some diagnostic codes may log occurrences that did not result in complaints. The most likely cause of an intermittent problem is a faulty connection or damaged wiring. The next likely cause is a component failure. The least likely cause is the failure of the ECM. Diagnostic codes that are logged repeatedly may indicate a problem that needs special investigation. If the symptoms continue, use the proper procedure for troubleshooting the symptoms that have been experienced by the operator.Note: Always clear logged diagnostic codes after investigating and correcting the problem which generated the code.
Illustration 1 g00592364
The Illustration 1 indicates output voltage from the coolant temperature sensor. The normal output range of the sensor is between 0.2 VDC and 4.8 VDC. If the sensor or wiring to the sensor becomes open or shorted, a diagnostic code will be generated. The diagnostic code will remain active until the condition disappears or the condition is corrected. The diagnostic code will be logged in the memory of the ECM. Cat ET can be used to turn ON the engine monitoring for a specific sensor. When the monitoring is turned ON, the sensor's value and any diagnostic event code will appear on Cat ET. When the features are turned OFF, the engine monitoring will be disabled, but the event is logged in the ECM.Diagnostic Flash Codes
The service technician may use the diagnostic enable switch on the operator's panel in order to access "ACTIVE" diagnostic flash codes. Flash codes are used to represent diagnostic codes in the electronic system in order to alert the operator that a problem exists. The flash codes are a two digit number. A series of flashes represents the flash code on the service engine lamp. The service engine lamp is located on the operator's panel. Use the following procedure in order to access flash codes.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine should be off.
Push the diagnostic enable switch.
If the service engine lamp was not illuminated, the service engine lamp will flash on and off for 5 times. The service engine lamp will remain off for one second. The service engine lamp will flash on and off for five times. The service engine lamp will then remain off. The code 55 indicates that no diagnostic code was present.
If the service engine lamp was illuminated, the service engine lamp will stay illuminated for another five seconds. The service engine lamp will then turn off. The service engine lamp will begin to flash the first number of the two digit flash code. The service engine lamp will turn off for one second. The service engine lamp will flash the second number of the two digit code.
If two or more diagnostic flash codes are present, the next diagnostic code will begin to flash after a three second delay. The following codes will be displayed in the same manner as the first code.
Refer to the following example.EXAMPLENote: Flash Code 27 would flash on the diagnostic lamp in the following manner.
Two short flashes with approximately 0.3 seconds between flashes.
One second hesitation
Seven short flashes with approximately 0.3 seconds between flashes.Note: Flash codes can represent more than one diagnostic code. Make a note of all of the diagnostic codes that are represented by a particular flash code. Refer to Table 1. The engine does not need to be started in order to view diagnostic Flash codes.Diagnostic Terminology
