PARTIAL CREDIT AVAILABLE FOR SALES OF VALVE SPRING PRODUCT UPDATES FOR CERTAIN 3208 NA ENGINES, 1100, 1108, PI7007 U-27 A-25 AU-22 C-26 E-24 TT-3 TA-1 TM-3 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this Product Improvement Program is to provide an incentive for dealers to SELL the stronger valve springs for the 3208 NA (Naturally-Aspirated) Engines. Through this Program Caterpillar will provide a flat rate contribution of $50 (U.S.) for each valve spring update SOLD on the listed models. See Engine Product Update Guide, PEGP2811, Page 16 (Product Update U133) Parts Departments at Caterpillar dealers have received information on how to sell this update in ENG 83-4. The new valve spring and associated hardware have been in production and available for parts service since the first quarter of 1981. The new springs have a larger diameter wire and coil, and thus lower stress than the former springs. The new valve springs are a recommended Product Update which greatly reduces the possibility of failure and unscheduled downtime, and provides the user with a product improvement not available when the engine was built. For more information, refer to the following publications: Service Magazine dated April 4, 1983 Truck Engine News (Next Issue) Engine News (Next Issue) Engine Product Update Guide, PEGP2811, Page 16; Update U133 Special Instruction, SMHS8167, Installation Of 1W4259 Valve Springs Special Instruction, SMHS8131, Use Of 6V7028 Spring Seat Enlarger Affected Engines And Parts Needed All the listed naturally-aspirated models are included in this Program provided they are also within the age limitations in the following list, and the valve spring update is a revenue sale. There are no km (mile) or hour limitations. (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Action Requested (Change Parts Stock Records) Dealers are urged to promote sales of this valve spring Product Update U133 on all the listed models. The Program APPLIES ONLY TO REVENUE SALES of the valve spring update completed after the announcement date of this Service Letter. Engines updated as a result of a warrantable valve spring failure are not eligible for this contribution. The Caterpillar contribution can be used to reduce your retail price of the valve spring update, or as a sales incentive, or as a method to increase the profit of the sale. All the new parts must be installed at the same time on all 16 valves. Do not mix former and new parts on the same head or engine. Use Special Instruction SMHS8167 for the correct procedure to install these larger springs. Also, for engines with serial numbers 90N1-90N17385 or 75V1-75V2421, or any engine with 9N1107 Cylinder Head Assemblies, see Special Instruction SMHS8131. : When the rocker arm shaft is installed, make sure that all valve adjustment screws are loose and are not touching the push rods. Tighten the mounting bolts to 24 +/- 7 N X m (18 +/- 5 lb ft). Adjust valve lash only after mounting bolts have been tightened. Also, change your parts usage records to show that the former 9N3617 or 9N3387 Springs should not be used in 3208 Naturally-Aspirated Engines. Show all the new parts listed in this Service Letter, noting that all new parts should be used on all 16 valves. The 9N3617 Springs are still serviced for 1100 and 3100 Series Engines. Inspection Of Engine Valve Springs Some engines in this Program may have previously been updated in the field. There are two methods to determine which springs are used. One method is using the spring size gauge shown in the first Illustration. This gauge, made as shown, will go over the O.D. of the former springs (9N3617, 9N3387). It will not go around the O.D. of the new 1W4259 Spring. The spring O.D. increased from 36.6 mm (1.44") to the 39.6 mm (1.56"). (SEE ILLUSTRATION) Another method, if the valves are installed in the head, is by inspecting the spring retainer. See second Illustration. Note the obvious differences between the two types of retainers. Warranty Allowances If the valve spring update on a listed engine was a REVENUE SALE (not part of a warranty repair) and the engine is within the age limitations listed on Page 2, Caterpillar will contribute $50.00 (U.S.). Submit one separate claim for each Engine Update U133 sold. List $50.00 (U.S.) in the "other expenses" portion on the claim. Type "PI7007" in responsible part number box, and "7751" in "group number" box. Do not list any parts or other expenses on the claim. Complete each claim in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on PIP's. Parts Disposition Scrap the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin, "Warranty Parts Handling". Termination Date April 30, 1984.
