Troubleshooting Test Step Value Result
1. Check for Codes
A. Apply electrical power to the engine.
B. Establish communication between Cat ® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
C. Look for active or logged diagnostic codes.
Diagnostic Codes
Result: An E363, 174-0, 174-15, or 174-16 code is present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Fuel Tank Level
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Inspect the fuel level to make sure that the tank level is not too low.
Fuel Level
Result: The fuel level is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The fuel level is NOT OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
3. Inspect the Fuel Lines
A. Visually inspect the fuel lines between the priming pump and the inlet to the cylinder heads that are at the back of the engine. Inspect the fuel return line from the cylinder heads to the fuel tank. Inspect the lines for restrictions, pinching, and swelling. Also, inspect the fuel cooler. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel System - Inspect" for additional information.
Fuel Lines
Result: The fuel lines and the fuel cooler are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: A problem has been identified with the fuel lines and/or the fuel cooler.
Repair: Perform the necessary repairs. Verify that the problem has been resolved.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Replace the Fuel Temperature Sensor
A. Turn the keyswitch to OFF.
B. Replace the fuel temperature sensor on the secondary filter head.
Fuel Temperature Sensor
Result: The fuel temperature sensor was replaced.
Result: The code is no longer active.
Return the engine to service.
Result: The 174 code remains active.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Fuel Return Pressure Regulator
A. Replace the fuel return pressure regulator. Verify that the problem has been resolved.
B. Establish communication between Caterpillar ® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Regulator
Result: The fuel temperature is within specifications.
The problem has been resolved. Return the unit to service.
Result: The fuel temperature is not within specifications. The event code for high fuel temperature remains active.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Perform a Cylinder Cutout Test
A. Perform a "Cylinder Cutout Test" in Cat ET.
Cutout Test
Result: Injector is not OK.
Repair: Replace the identified injectors. Verify that all trim files are installed into the ECM correctly. Refer to Troubleshooting , "Injector Trim File - Install". Repeat the "Cylinder Cutout Test" after performing the necessary repairs. Repeat the process until all the injectors are operating properly.
Return to service.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
