(12) Suction screenEngine oil pump (11) is a gear-type pump that generates pressure for the engine lubrication system. The engine oil pump is bolted to the bottom of engine block (2) inside the engine crankcase toward the front of the engine. The pump gears are driven by front gear train (6). Oil is drawn into the inlet of the pump through suction screen (12) into a suction tube that is connected to the oil pump.Pressure relief valve (8) is internal to the engine oil pump. The pressure relief valve controls the engine oil pressure to a maximum of 675 55 kPa (98 8 psi). Excess engine oil that is bypassed by the oil pump is returned to engine oil pan (9).The pressurized oil is directed through engine oil cooler (10). The engine oil cooler lowers the temperature of the engine oil before the engine oil is filtered. If the oil cooler becomes restricted, engine oil cooler bypass valve (7) allows engine oil to bypass the oil cooler. When the pressure differential across the oil cooler exceeds 255 kPa (37 psi), engine oil will bypass the oil cooler. The oil cooler is mounted to the right side of the engine. The pressure relief valve is located in the oil filter base.Engine oil filters (1) are used to clean the engine oil. If the oil filters become restricted, engine oil filter bypass valve (5) allows engine oil to bypass the oil filter. When the pressure differential across the oil filter exceeds 255 kPa (37 psi), engine oil will bypass the oil filter. Spin-on oil filters are used for this engine. The filters are on the right side of the engine. The pressure relief valve is located in the oil filter base. The oil enters the main oil gallery in the engine block and is distributed among the various passages that feed the required components.Ports and passages are drilled in the cylinder block to supply oil to front gear train (6), auxiliary water pump (3), and turbocharger (4).

(22) Crankshaft main bearing journal
(23) Bearing journal for the front idler gearClean engine oil from the filter flows into the main oil gallery through a port to the main oil gallery from oil cooler (21). The main oil gallery supplies oil to each camshaft bearing journal (18) and each crankshaft main bearing journal (22). The oil flows to the bearing journal for the front idler gear (23) through passages in the engine block. Drilled holes that are in the crankshaft connect the oil supply for the main bearings to the rod bearings. Passages for the valve lifters and rocker arm shaft (15 - 16 - 17) supply oil to the valve components. Oil port for the turbocharger supply (14) provides oil to the turbocharger accumulator. Oil port (19) for the auxiliary water pump provides oil to the oil lines for the water pump.

Typical view of piston cooling jet (20)
At each cylinder there are also passages that supply oil to piston cooling jets (20). These passages are drilled into the engine block directly above the main bearing journals. Each of the piston cooling jets direct a spray of engine oil toward the underside of the piston. The oil spray is directed toward a manifold that is behind the ring band of the piston. This oil supply cools the piston rings.

Oil flow to and from the cylinder head
(25) Drilled oil passages
(26) Oil drain passagesThe engine oil travels to the rocker shaft through a series of drilled oil passages (25) in the cylinder head. The passages provide pressurized oil to the hollow center of the rocker arm shaft. The pressurized oil that reaches the rocker shaft lubricates the rocker arms, valve guides, and pushrods. To maintain pressure in the lubrication system, the rocker arm shaft has an orifice that restricts the flow of the engine oil. Oil flows to the cylinder head for lubrication and cooling. The oil drains back to the oil pan through various oil drain passages (26) in the cylinder head and the engine block.
