Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from hot coolant, steam and alkali.At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure. The radiator and all lines to heaters or the engine contain hot coolant or steam. Any contact can cause severe burns.Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure only when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system until the level of the coolant is below the temperature regulators. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant (ELC) - Change" for the machine that is being serviced. Drain all fluids in a suitable container for storage or for disposal.

Remove bolts (3) and upper grill (1) .
Remove bolts (4) and lower grill (2) .
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the opposite side of the machine.

Remove bolts (6) to lower shield assembly (8) .
Remove bolts (5) and upper shield assembly (7) .

Disconnect hose assembly (14) from tube assembly (11) .
Remove two bolts and retainers (15) .
Remove bolt (12) and clip (13) .
Remove two bolts and retainers (10) that secure tube assembly (11) to elbow (9) .
Disconnect tube assembly (11) from elbow (9) .
Disconnect tube assembly (11) from the water pump and remove the tube assembly from the machine.

Loosen hose clamp (18) .
Remove bolts (21) that secure bracket (20) to oil filter base (22) .
Disconnect tube assembly (19) from water line elbow (17) .
Disconnect hose assembly (16) from elbow (9) .

Remove clip (23) from the water temperature regulator housing.
Remove clips (24) that secure the ether starting aid tube assembly to the water temperature regulator housing.
Disconnect tube assemblies (25) from the water temperature regulator housing.

Remove bolts (27) that secure the left air cleaner support (26) to water temperature regulator housing (28) .
Repeat Step 20 for the right air cleaner support.

Install Tooling (A) on water temperature regulator housing (28) . Attach a suitable lifting device in order to support water temperature regulator housing (28) .
