Certain 3500B and 3500 with EUI option EPG and Marine Auxiliary engines may have a number of problems caused by the ECM personality modules (FLASH files). New personality modules have been released to correct these issues. Refer to the Rework Procedure, Parts Needed section for a complete description of the improvements made to the FLASH files.
It is recommended that all engines be updated with the new personality modules. However, it is not required if the engine is not affected by any of the issues corrected in the new software. Always refer to the FIND system for the latest software information.

Parts Needed
The only Parts Needed to perform this service letter are the FLASH files. See the attached Flash File Cross Reference to determine the correct FLASH file for the engine to be updated.
Action Required
Tools Needed
7X1701 - Caterpillar Communication Adapter (Requires NEXG4523 SPM)7X1425 - Cable Assembly (PC to Communication Adapter)139-4166 - Cable Assembly (Unicable connecting Communication Adapter to Engine)NEXG4523- SPM for newly purchased 7X1701 Com Adapter- PC capable of running Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) software version 2.0 or later 1. Refer to the attached Flash File Cross Reference section to determine which software needs to be flashed into the ECM. Obtain this software from the Caterpillar Mailbox System, the SIS Web System, or the SIS FLASH FILES CD. The SIS FLASH FILES CD may take up to two months to receive the most up to date files. The mailbox and SIS Web systems always have the latest software. If you are not set up to use the mailbox call 1-800-HELP EDI or 309-735-4334 from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM Central (Peoria) Time for assistance. Be prepared to leave your name, mailing address, dealer code, and phone number. A PC, error correcting modem, and HyperAccess 5 for Dos form number LERQ3133 are required to use the mailbox system. The time required to receive access to the mailbox system can vary widely depending on the workload of the administrators. Be sure to request access to this system well before you need it.
2. Flash the new software into the ECM.3. For Marine Auxiliary engines only: A wiring change will need to be made when field updating to the new software. This change is necessary because of the addition of the new dedicated low idle switch. Refer to the Flash file cross-reference "Reason for software change" section for more information regarding the dedicated low idle switch. ECM J1-P26 on Marine Aux engines currently has circuit 412-BU connecting it to the Electronic Speed Switch (ESS) pin 12. This circuit currently serves no function and can be disconnected by removing the wire from pin 12 of the ESS and tying it back or installing the low idle switch. IF THIS CHANGE IS NOT MADE, THE ENGINE WILL REMAIN AT LOW IDLE.4. Check engine for proper operation.Service Claim Allowances
This is a 1.0-hour job.
