Introduction
This Technical Information Bulletin is to be used as a supplement to the existing Disassembly and Assembly manuals. This supplement outlines the disassembly procedure to remove the engine rear crankshaft 5I-7660 Seal As without damaging the seal assembly. Field returns of the seal assembly are necessary for failure analysis and possible product improvement.Problem
There have been reports of oil leaking from the engine rear crankshaft 5I-7660 Seal As on the flywheel housing of certain Excavators and Mobile Hydraulic Power Units.Solution
This problem is currently under investigation and a root cause has not yet been determined for the seal leak. Use the ""Supplemental Disassembly Procedure"" below as a supplement to the existing Disassembly and Assembly manuals for your machine to remove 5I-7660 Seal As . Refer to Table 1 for a list of the Disassembly and Assembly manuals that are appropriate for your machine for the removal of the main hydraulic pump, the flywheel, and the flywheel housing.After using the supplemental disassembly procedure to remove the failed seal assembly, please return the failed seal assembly to Yuhiko Uehara at the following address:Caterpillar Japan Ltd. / Akashi Plant

Remove the main hydraulic pump. Refer to Table 1 for the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly manual for your machine.
Remove the flywheel. Refer to Table 1 for the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly manual for your machine.

Remove flywheel housing (1). Refer to Table 1 for the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly manual for your machine.
Remove two bolts from flywheel housing (1) and install two guide bolts (2) to prevent the flywheel housing from coming off. Refer to Illustration 1.
Remove the remaining bolts (3) from the flywheel housing. Refer to Illustration 1

Separate flywheel housing (1) from the engine cylinder block by using a pry bar. Refer to Illustration 2.Note: Be careful not to damage 5I-7660 Seal As .

Remove flywheel housing (1) and turn the flywheel housing over as shown in Illustration 3.
Remove 5I-7660 Seal As (4) from the flywheel housing. Use an appropriate tool to hit the steel ring of the seal assembly at two or three positions. Refer to Illustration 3. Use an appropriate tool to remove the seal assembly from the flywheel housing without damaging the seal assembly.Note: Be careful not to hit the rubber portion of the seal assembly.
