Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Repair all Active Codes
Repair
Result: A code is not active.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A code is active.
Repair: Repair or replace anything necessary.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Gather Operator Information
Information
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Verify that the Complaint is not due to Normal Engine Operation
Verify
Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Perform a Visual Inspection of the Engine
A. Inspect the following items:
- Wiring
- Connectors
- Fuel level
- Fuel supply
- Engine oil level
- Engine oil supply
- Coolant level
- Intake air system
- Air exhaust system
Inspect
Result: The engine is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The engine is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace anything necessary.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
A. Inspect for following problems:
- Damage
- Abrasion
- Corrosion
- Incorrect attachment
Inspect
Result: The connectors and wiring appear to be OK.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Result: There is a problem with the connectors and/or wiring.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check for Logged Codes
Codes
Result: A code is not logged.
Result: A code is logged.
- Determine if the logged diagnostic codes correlate to probable causes.
- Determine if the logged diagnostic codes occur at the same time as the symptoms.
- Determine if the logged diagnostic codes are logged repeatedly.
If these inspections do not reveal any problems, use the procedure that best describes the symptoms.Unit Is Not Shutting Down
Shutdown Reason: SPN 9679 Engine Idle Management Shutdown ReasonUsed to indicate the condition not allowing the engine to shut down when the idle management system is active.0000b = Operator input requestThis reason is not used in the Cat EIRS software.0001b = Engine coolant temperatureIf this reason is present, engine coolant temperature is below the threshold that is set in Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) or engine coolant temperature is above 95° C (203° F).If this shutdown reason persists after the engine has had sufficient time to warm up, consider the following:
Lower the "Automatic Engine Stop Coolant Temperature" in Cat ET.
Ensure that the thermostats and radiator fan are functioning properly.
Ensure that the coolant temperature sensor is functioning properly.
Ensure that the wiring harness for coolant temperature sensor is functioning properly.0010b = Battery voltageIf this reason is present, electrical system voltage is below the minimum requirement for shutdown (26.0 V).If this shutdown reason persists after the engine has had sufficient time to charge the batteries, consider the following:
Ensure that the batteries are charged and functional.
Ensure that the alternator is functioning properly.
Ensure that the battery cables and alternator cables are connected appropriately and terminals have not come loose or have become corroded.
Ensure that wiring harness for ECM power is connected and functioning properly without excessive restriction.0011b = Transmission oil temperatureIf this reason is present, transmission oil temperature is not meeting the threshold that is set in Cat ET.If this shutdown reason persists after the transmission has had sufficient time to warm up, consider the following:
Lower the "Automatic Engine Stop Transmission Oil Temperature" in Cat ET.
Ensure that the temperature sensor on the transmission is functioning properly.
Ensure that the wiring harness for the transmission oil temperature sensor is functioning properly.
Ensure that theCANmessage from the transmission is being communicated properly, refer to Application and Installation Guide, LEBW0065.0100b = Power end lube oil temperatureIf this reason is present, power end gear box lube oil temperature is not meeting the threshold that is set in Cat ET.If this shutdown reason persists after the gear box has had sufficient time to warm up, consider the following:
Lower the "Automatic Engine Stop Well Stimulation Pump Gear Box Oil Temperature" in Cat ET.
Ensure that the lube oil temperature sensor on your pump gear box is functioning properly.
Ensure that the wiring harness for gear box lube oil temperature sensor is functioning properly.
Ensure that the CAN message is being communicated properly, refer to Application and Installation Guide, LEBW0065.0101b = Battery pack #1 (Trailer/Engine) State of ChargeIf this reason is present, then the Trailer/Engine battery pack charging current is too high.  The threshold for shutdown is variable depending on past charging and starting characteristics, however the minimum threshold is 5 Amps (If charging current while EIRS is active is below 5A this reason will go away). If this shutdown reason persists after the battery has had sufficient time to charge, consider the following:
Ensure that the battery is still functional and cables are properly connected (measure current with a hand held current probe on the battery ground cable… current should be between 0 and 5A while the engine is running to allow a shutdown).
Ensure that the sensor is installed in the correct orientation, refer to Application and Installation Guide, LEBW0065.
Ensure the wiring harness for current sensor #1 is functional (consider swapping the wiring harness between current sensor #1 and current sensor #2 to determine if the reason follows the current sensor or the harness).0110b = Battery pack #2 (Electric Start) State of ChargeIf this reason is present, the Starter battery pack charging current is too high.  The threshold for shutdown is variable depending on past charging and starting characteristics, however the minimum threshold is 5 Amps (If the charging current while EIRS is active is below 5A this reason will go away).
Ensure the wiring harness for current sensor #2 is functional (consider swapping the wiring harness between current sensor #1 and current sensor #2 to determine if the reason follows the current sensor or the harness).0111b = Exhaust TemperatureIf this reason is present, either right or left turbine inlet exhaust temperature is
