Data LinkThese characteristics provide fuel economy, driver comfort, and serviceability.A full range electronic governor controls the fuel injection pump output in order to maintain the engine rpm that is desired by the PEEC III system.Individual injection pumps meter the fuel. The individual injection pumps pump the fuel under high pressure to the fuel injector nozzle for each cylinder. Electronic timing advance control provides the best fuel injection timing over the full range of engine speed.Starting the Engine
The PEEC III engine may need to crank longer than a mechanically governed engine because some oil pressure is required for the electronic actuator to move the rack. The check engine light should be ON while the engine is cranking. After the engine is started, the check engine light should be ON for no more than 10 seconds. At temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), starting fluid might need to be sprayed into the air cleaner inlet. If the engine fails to start in 30 seconds, release the starter switch. Allow the starter motor to cool for two minutes before trying to start the engine again.
Excessive ether (starting fluid) can cause piston and ring damage. Use ether for cold weather starting purposes only.
Cold Mode Operation
The PEEC III system automatically idles the engine at 900 to 1000 rpm for the correct warm up time after a cold engine start. The cold mode operation starts when the temperature of the engine is below 5 °C (41 °F). The PEEC III system will reduce the idle speed to the programmed low idle when the engine is warm enough to drive the truck. The PEEC III system considers the engine warm enough to drive when the following conditions are met:
acceptable engine response
vehicle speed of two mph or more
15 minutes of running timeThe engine operating temperature is usually reached before the walk around inspection of the vehicle is completed.
Do not operate the vehicle with the engine in the cold mode condition. If the engine is operated in the cold mode, maximum rpm will be reduced to 1700 rpm and the power will be noticeably reduced.
After cold mode is completed, the truck should be operated at low rpm and low power until normal operating temperature is reached. The engine will reach normal operating temperature faster when the engine is operated low rpm and low power. Typically, the engine should be up to operating temperature by just driving through the yard toward the open road.Manual Fuel Shutoff Lever
A manual shutoff lever is located on the side of the fuel pump. The engine can be shut down by rotating the manual fuel shutoff lever counterclockwise. Rotating the manual shutoff lever clockwise will disable the shutoff solenoid.
DO NOT operate the engine without the rack actuator solenoid (BTM) in place and with the fuel shutoff solenoid disabled. Excessive engine speed (overspeed) may result.
Idle Shutdown Timer
The idle shutdown timer is a feature of the electronic control system that can be selected by the customer. This feature is one of the customer specified parameters. The idle shutdown timer may be programmed with the ECAP service tool. The idle shutdown timer may be programmed from three to sixty minutes in one minute increments.The idle shutdown timer feature will shut down the engine after a time period that is specified by the customer. In order to enable the idle shutdown timer, the following conditions must be met :
The idle shutdown timer must be selected.
The parking brake must be set.
The engine must be at operating temperature.
The vehicle speed must be 0 mph.
The engine must have no load.
The parking brake switch must be installed.The diagnostic lamp will start to flash at a rapid rate ninety seconds before the programmed idle time is reached. If the clutch is released during the final 90 seconds, the idle shutdown timer will be disabled until the parking brake is again reset. If the service brakes are applied during the final 90 seconds, the idle shutdown timer will be disabled until the parking brake is again reset.Customer Specified Parameters
The engine is capable of being programmed for several customer specified parameters. Customer specified parameters allow the owner to select horsepower ratings within a family in order to more efficiently match the vehicle to the application. The customer specified parameters are generally programmed so the vehicle will achieve optimum fuel efficiency and operator convenience.
