USE NEW OIL CONSUMPTION GRAPHS AND TEST REPORT 3208, 3300, 3400 Series Engines In All Applications, 1300, 1200, 0336 U-68 A-62 AU-56 B-25 C-63 E-56 O-51 TT-10 TA-5 TM-8 The November 23, 1981 Service Letter and its oil consumption curves are replaced by this Service Letter. Add a reference note to the November 23 Service Letter. New oil consumption graphs are published in this Service Letter for 3208 engines and 3300 and 3400 Series Engines in all applications, and should now be used to substantiate warranty repairs for excessive oil consumption. These graphs are for use only by dealer personnel and are not intended for owners or operators. There are two graphs for each model/series - the first in U.S. units and the second in metric units. Also, a new Oil Consumption Test Report (081227-06) is available and it has a convenient daily oil consumption log on the back side. See Illustration at end of this Service Letter. The Test Report and daily log are to be used now by owners or operators. They are printed on heavy durable paper. The test report is required before any repair for excessive oil consumption is done. It is intended that various external items be inspected prior to completion of this report. Also, be sure there is not something unusual about the particular application which could cause high oil consumption. See examples in following discussions. As a result of these new graphs, a new General Information Warranty Bulletin (No. 16 in U.S.) is being prepared. Use of 3208 (Naturally-Aspirated), 1100, And 3100 Series Engine Oil Control Graph This graph clearly shows two areas. The top area of the graph is the typical operating range of these engines. Because of the many different applications and typical load factors placed on the engine, it is possible for a unit to have a specific oil consumption plotted anywhere in the top section of the graph. The lower area of the graph shows the investigative range. However, a number of points must be considered before initiating a repair: 1. Due to engine break-in no investigation should be made prior to 8000 km (5000 mi), or 150 hr, or one season in the agricultural market. 2. Prior graphs showed a curve which represented the engines NOMINAL OIL CONTROL. With the new graph, it is our intention that an investigative procedure be performed if the unit is in the shaded area shown. Most oil control complaints fall within the investigative range shown by the shaded area. The top edge of the shaded area does not represent nominal oil consumption. 3. There are conditions, however, where an engine with oil consumption in the shaded area would not require repair. For example: (a) all units in a fleet fall within the investigative range - a repair would not be required because the application, driving habits, preventive maintenance schedule, or load factor, etc. could be the cause of high oil consumption rates. Engine repairs will not necessarily produce significant results if an item of this nature is the cause of oil consumption. Another example: (b) a fleet of city pickup and delivery tractors are all plotted within the repair range at approximately 140 liters fuel/liter oil (35 gal/qt) and all units have approximately 32,000 km (20,000 mi). One other unit, however, is at 72 liters fuel/liter oil (18 gal/qt). This one unit should be repaired. Dealer personnel need to examine and evaluate the circumstances pertinent to the daily operation of the individual unit. 1/830909/01/001 Use of 3300 Series Engine Oil Control Graph This graph clearly shows two areas. The top area of the graph is the typical operating range for 3300 Series Engines. The lower area of the graph shows the investigative range. However, a number of points must be considered before initiating a repair: 1. Due to engine break-in, no investigation should be made prior to 16,000
