Information:

Driven Equipment
Check
For lubrication and maintenance requirements relating to driven equipment such as generators, blowers, compressors, clutches and other on-board equipment, etc., refer to the OEM manufacturer's or locomotive rebuilder's recommendations.Check Flexible Rubber Couplings (If Equipped)
Visually inspect the rubber couplings for obvious fraying, deterioration or wear. If any of these conditions are evident, replace the rubber couplings. Refer to the OEM manufacturer's or locomotive rebuilder's instructions for the procedure to replace the rubber couplings.Check Spline Type Couplings (If Equipped)
Visually inspect the spline type couplings for excessive wear and proper lubrication. Refer to the locomotive rebuilder's and/or OEM manufacturer's specifications for driveline end play.If the spline type coupling needs to be lubricated, refer to the manufacturer's instructions. If excessive wear is evident or the driveline end play is out of specification, see your Caterpillar dealer for installation and application information.Refer to the locomotive rebuilder's or OEM's instructions for the procedure to replace the spline type couplings.Electronic Rack Sensor
Calibrate
Refer to the Service Manual and/or Troubleshooting Manual, SENR3941 for the correct procedure to calibrate the rack sensor.Prelube Pump (If Equipped)
Inspect for Proper Operation
Inspect the brushes, replace if necessary. Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks and electrical connections for damaged or frayed wires.Refer to the Service Manual for the correct procedure to replace the brushes.Vibration Damper
Inspect/Check
Damage to, or failure of, the damper will increase vibrations and result in damage to the crankshaft and other engine components. A failing vibration damper will cause more gear train noise at variable points in the engine speed range. The rubber vibration damper on the 3516 engine has marks on hub and ring. These marks will indicate the condition of the damper. If the marks are not in alignment, the rubber seal between the ring and the hub has separated from the ring and/or hub.If the marks are not in alignment, install a new damper.A vibration damper can have a visual wobble (movement to the front and rear when in rotation) on the outer ring. This does not mean a replacement is necessary since some wobble of the outer ring is normal. To see if the amount of wobble is acceptable, or replacement is necessary, check the damper with the procedure in the Service Manual.Visually inspect the viscous damper for leaks. If leaking is observed, replace the seals. Refer to the Service Manual for the procedure to replace the seals.Engine Mounts
Inspect/Check
The crankcase, generator and auxiliary equipment bolt to the frame rails which in turn are supported by a locomotive soft mount system.
Typical Soft Mount InstallationCaterpillar recommends checking the engine mounts for deterioration and proper bolt torque. This will prevent excessive engine vibration and cab noise caused from improper torque and mounting. Refer to your Caterpillar dealer and/or the Installation and Application Guide for Industrial or Locomotive Engines for recommended installation torque values.Turbochargers
Inspect/Check
1. Remove the exhaust outlet piping and inlet piping from the turbocharger.2. Turn the turbine and compressor wheel by hand.3. The assembly should turn freely.4. Inspect the turbine wheel and compressor wheel for contact with the turbocharger housing.5. There should be no visible signs of contact between the turbine wheel or compressor wheel and the turbocharger housing. 6. Visually check for oil and water leaks.Jacket Water Pump
Inspect/Check Seals for Leaks
Visually check for coolant water leaks at the pump housing and cover. If maintenance is required, refer to the "Every Two Years" interval section in this publication for jacket water pump maintenance options.
