Information:
1. Release the pressure in the cooling system by slowly loosening the fill cap on the radiator. Drain the coolant from the cooling system by placing a drain hose through the hole in the back of the bumper and opening the drain valve. Drain the coolant from the cooling system in a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to the "Operation & Maintenance Manual" for cooling system capacities.
Effective July 1, 1992 regulations prohibit the venting of any refrigerant in the atmosphere. Refer to Caterpillar publication SENR3334, SENR5664 and NEDG5065 for the proper procedure, equipment and tools to reclaim refrigerant from any Caterpillar machine.
Always wear goggles when working on air conditioning systems. The system is under pressure at all times, engine running or not. Escaping refrigerant R12 (C C12 F2Dichloro Difluoro Methane) and refrigerant R-134A can cause freezing of human flesh. Do not smoke while working on air conditioning system. Inhaling Refrigerant R-12 or R-134A through any smoking material, although not toxic or flammable, can cause violent illness. Also heat must never be applied to a charged system. Refer to the Air Conditioning And Heating Service Manual Form No. SENR3334 and SENR5664, for more information on removal and installation of lines and refrigerant from the system.
2. Remove the refrigerant from the air conditioning system using a refrigerant reclaimer. 3. Remove bolts (1) from the radiator guard.4. Disconnect the wire harness from the back-up alarm and rear lights. The wire harness is underneath the left lower corner of the radiator guard. Use two people and remove the radiator guard from the shroud. The weight of the radiator guard is 24 Kg (53 lb). 5. Remove bolt (2) from the air dryer hose clip.6. Remove bolts (3) from the air dryer brackets. Set the air dryer assembly aside.7. Loosen hose clamps (4) from the lower radiator hose. Slide the radiator hose off of the radiator fitting. 8. Loosen hose clamp (5) from the upper radiator hose. Slide the hose off of the radiator fitting. 9. Disconnect the fittings of air condenser lines (6) from the air conditioner condenser. Plug the fittings in order to keep dirt out of the refrigerant system. 10. Attach lifting slings and a hoist to shroud handles (7). 11. Remove six bolts (8), the spacers and the washers from the radiator shroud. Four of the bolts are located under rubber guard (9). Two of the bolts are on the right side of the shroud and two of the bolts are on the left side of the shroud.12. Remove the radiator group from the machine frame. The weight of the radiator group is 173 Kg (380 lb).Install Radiator
Check the condition of the radiator prior to installation. Remove any dirt or debris that may restrict the flow of air through the core. If any of the cooling fins are bent, they should be straightened.1. Check the condition of O-ring seals used in the hose assemblies that were disconnected. If any of the seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement. 2. Attach lifting slings and a hoist to shroud handles (7). Position the radiator group to the machine frame. 3. Install six bolts (8), the spacers and the washers in the radiator shroud. 4. Connect the fittings of air condenser lines (6) to the air conditioner condenser. 5. Slide the upper radiator hose on to the radiator fitting. Tighten hose clamp (5). 6. Slide the lower radiator hose on to the radiator fitting. Tighten hose clamps (4) to the lower radiator hose.7. Position the air dryer assembly to its original location on the radiator shroud.8. Install bolts (3) in the air dryer brackets.9. Position the air dryer lines clip to the machine frame.10. Install bolt (2) in the air dryer hose clip. 11. Use two people in order to position the radiator guard to the shroud.12. Connect the wire harness to the back-up alarm and rear lights. The wire harness is underneath the left lower corner of the radiator guard.13. Install bolts (1) in order to secure the radiator guard to the shroud.14. Fill the radiator to the proper level with engine coolant. Refer to the "Operation & Maintenance Manual" for the proper procedures in order to fill the radiator.15. Fill the air conditioning system with refrigerant to the correct pressure level. Refer to SENR3334, SENR5664 and NEDG5065 for the proper filling procedure.
