Test Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF/RESET position.
Illustration 2 g01233770
Left side engine view (1) J1/P1 ECM connectors
Thoroughly inspect connectors (1) and any other connectors in the circuit. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Check the harness and wiring for corrosion, abrasion, and pinch points from the throttle switch to the ECM.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely inserted and coupled. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The wiring and the connectors appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem with the wiring and/or the connectors.Repair: Repair the wiring and/or the connectors. Replace parts, if necessary. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled. Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check the Status of the Remote Throttle
Ensure that the transmission is in the neutral position. Apply the parking brake. Start the scraper engine. Place the throttle for the scraper engine in the low idle position.
Connect the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to the service tool connector.
Access the status for the "Remote Throttle Switch".
While you monitor the status, set the remote throttle switch to the ON position.
While you monitor the status, operate the switches for the ACCEL input and the DECEL input.Expected Result:The status for the "Remote Throttle Switch" indicates "On" when the On/Off switch is in the ON position. The status for the "Remote Throttle Accel" indicates "On" when the switch for the ACCEL input is in the ACCEL position. The status for the "Remote Throttle Decel" indicates "On" when the switch for the DECEL input is in the DECEL position. Results:
OK - The status changed accordingly.Repair: The remote throttle is operating properly at this time.Verify that the requirements for the remote throttle were met prior to the problem. If the problem is intermittent, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
Not OK - There is a problem with the switch circuits. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Check the Switch Circuits at the Harness ConnectorNote: If all of the switches are inoperative, the problem may be caused by the return wire.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the harness connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.

( 1 ) The status for "Remote Throttle Switch" will indicate "Abnormal or Incorrect Data".Expected Result:The status for the remote throttle changes according to Table 1.Results:
OK - The status for the remote throttle changes according to the Table. There is a problem between the machine connector and the switches.Repair: Connect the harness connectors. Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK - The status for the remote throttle does not change according to the Table. There is a problem between the machine connector and the ECM.Repair: Leave the harness connectors disconnected. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Check the Switch Circuits at the ECM
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Insert a 7X-1715 Adapter Cable As (40-PIN BREAKOUT) between the J1 and P1 ECM connectors.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.Note: The harness connectors must be disconnected.
