Illustration 1 g02139237Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly. Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. If a tool, a procedure, a work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar is used, ensure that it is safe for you and for other people to use. Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will not be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures that are used.Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this manual and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. The hazards are identified by the safety alert symbol which is followed by a signal word such as danger, warning, or caution. This guideline covers visual inspection of used rear engine mounts to determine reusability. A used engine mount must be inspected for rubber cracking and deterioration. Current "generalized" recommendations say that rear engine mounts should be replaced at the third major overhaul. Often rear engine mounts can be used again, even after the third overhaul. At each rebuild, several recommendations can be followed to determine the specifications for "Use again" or "Do not use again". If these specifications are met, the rear engine mounts can be used again.Mounts that meet the specifications found in this guideline can be expected to give normal performance until the next overhaul, when used again in the same application. Never use a rear engine mount that this guideline indicates should not be used again. Before installing a used reconditioned part, correct any condition that may have caused the original damage.Service Letters and Technical Information Bulletins
The most recent Service Letters and Technical Information Bulletins that are related to this component shall be reviewed before beginning work. Often Service Letters and Technical Information Bulletins contain upgrades in repair procedures, parts, and safety information that pertain to the parts or components being repaired.
Replacement Parts
Consult the applicable Parts Identification manual for your engine.Visual Inspection
Once the rear engine mount has been removed, visually inspect the mount. The following illustrations show examples of rear engine mounts that can and cannot be used again.Inspect rubber in the mount assembly for deterioration. Also check bonding of rubber between inner bracket and outer shell. If rear engine mount is to be used again, the rubber must be pliable. If rubber is hard and dry with severe cracks, the mount should not be used again. The following photographs will help determine if a rear engine mount can be used again. If mounts are used again, switch the mounts from side to side.
