Information:

Electric Starting Motor
Inspect/Rebuild or Exchange
One unscheduled failure caused by any of these components will cost more in downtime than maintaining them before failure. The cost incurred to maintain these components before failure as recommended, could be significantly less than if the component fails. It is less costly to maintain components before failure than it is to operate the engine until the component fails.By maintaining these components before failure, unscheduled downtime will be minimized and the chances for potential damage to other engine parts reduced. The prevention of unscheduled downtime saves money and lowers operating costs. If the engine is operated until the component(s) fails, it could cause additional damage to the engine resulting in repair costs as much as twenty-five times or more the repair cost before failure cost. This excessive cost is due to the additional engine damage that could have been prevented. Our recommended intervals for performing preventive maintenance on these components are based on experience and gathered data relative to the expectant life of the engine and its components. These maintenance intervals were developed as a service for the owner's use to minimize unexpected and costly repairs as well as to serve as an aid to lowering operating costs.Failure to follow the recommendations could result in unexpected, costly repairs and unscheduled downtime.Caterpillar recommends that the most cost effective method of operation for these components is to inspect the unit before it fails.Electric Starting Motor - Removal and Installation
Remove Electric Starting Motor1. Disconnect the wires from the starting motor.2. Use a hoist and fasten a nylon strap to the electric starting motor. Remove three bolts that fasten the electric starting motor to the flywheel housing.3. Remove the electric starting motor. Install Electric Starting Motor4. Use a hoist and place the electric starting motor in position on the flywheel housing.5. Install the three bolts that fasten the electric starting motor to the flywheel housing.6. Connect the wires to the starting motor.Maintenance Options
New Parts - Genuine Caterpillar parts are constantly tested and modified to incorporate the latest design advances. Your Caterpillar dealer can provide the parts needed for rebuilding the components. Your benefit: Long-lasting replacement parts at competitive prices. Repair Kits - These useful kits can be obtained from your Caterpillar dealer. These kits include all the necessary parts and instructions to repair the components, in either the owner's maintenance shop or at a Caterpillar servicing dealer's facility. Repair kits simplify parts ordering, help speed repairs and reduce parts cost. Remanufactured - This process uses manufacturing techniques and procedures to restore the components to like-new performance capability. This process always involves an end product which conforms to the manufacturer's "original" functional specifications. Remanufactured parts may not be available in your area. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for information. New Components - Replace worn or failing components with new components. Before deciding which method is best, make sure all of the options and costs associated with repair have been considered. Some considerations are:* The costs associated with using separate parts from inventory versus the cost of a repair kit.* Downtime costs while the product is being rebuilt or repaired.* Total parts and labor costs for repairs versus the actual Remanufactured cost.* Remanufactured components from Caterpillar (if available) are covered by a standard, factory warranty.Caterpillar Recommendation
To minimize downtime, Caterpillar recommends that the use of Remanufactured components (subject to availability) is the most cost effective option.Fuel Injectors
Test
It is far less costly to test for and service an improperly operating fuel injector before failure than it is to operate your engine until a fuel injector fails.By operating your engine until a fuel injector fails, you are risking the chance of a piston seizure as well as potential damage to other related engine parts. The cost for repairing a piston seizure can be many times more costly than replacing fuel injectors with Remanufactured injectors. It's your choice, but remember, failure to follow our recommendations could result in unexpected, costly repairs and unscheduled downtime. By following our recommendation to service your fuel injectors before failure, you will reduce the chances for downtime, improve fuel consumption and obviously, lower your operating costs. The recommended service intervals for performing preventive maintenance on your fuel injectors are based on experience and accumulated information regarding the expectant life of the engine and its components. To be cost effective, Caterpillar recommends that you test your fuel injectors at regularly scheduled intervals to identify improperly operating injectors prior to failure.Maintenance Options
Dealer Test - Your Caterpillar dealer can test your nozzles for proper operation. Remanufactured (if available) - This process uses manufacturing techniques and procedures to restore fuel injectors to like-new performance capability. This process yields an end product which conforms to Caterpillar's "original" functional specification. Your Caterpillar Remanufactured injectors have been tested for the same critical operating characteristics as the original injectors. New - Replace with new fuel injectors. Before deciding which method is best, you should make sure you have considered all of the options and costs associated with repair. Some considerations are:* Downtime costs while the product is being tested, rebuilt or repaired.* Total parts and labor costs for repairs versus the actual Remanufactured component cost (if available).* Remanufactured components from Caterpillar are covered by a factory warranty.Caterpillar Recommendation
To minimize downtime and provide you with the lowest cost and highest value, Caterpillar recommends the following:* Dealer Testing, if service is being performed at an approved Caterpillar servicing facility using proper test equipment and procedures.* Remanufactured components, when a test facility is not readily available.Test Fuel Injection Injectors
Whenever the engine performs in such a manner that a fuel injector is suspected of causing irregular running, smoking or knocking, isolate each fuel injector, one at a time, to determine the malfunctioning injector. For complete fuel injector testing, consult your authorized Caterpillar engine dealer. For Removal and Installation procedure, refer to the "Emergency Repair" section of this manual.Top End Overhaul
One maintenance interval for some engine ratings is labeled TOP END, because it involves removal, inspection, and rework of the cylinder head components. This maintenance interval is dependent on load-sensitive items/total liters
