Gauges
Your engine may not be equipped with the same or all of the gauges as shown in the illustrations. The illustrations shown are of typical gauges and are optional.Gauges provide a "look" inside the engine. Be sure they are in good working order. You can determine what is the "normal" operating range by observing the gauges over a period of time.Noticeable changes in gauge readings are indicative of potential gauge or engine problems. This also applies to gauge readings that have changed significantly but are still within specifications. The cause of any sudden or significant change in readings should be determined and corrected. Contact your Caterpillar dealer for assistance as needed. Tachometer - Indicates engine rpm. When the governor control (notch) lever is moved to the FULL SPEED (highest notch) position without load, the engine is running at high idle. The engine can be operated at this speed for long periods of time without shortening engine life. Engine Jacket Water Temperature - Indicates engine jacket water (high temperature) outlet temperature. The water temperature reading may vary according to load, but should never exceed the boiling temperature for the pressurized system with a maximum of 93°C (200°F). Engine jacket water temperature range is 80 to 93°C (175 to 200°F) and inlet controlled to 85°C (185°F). Engine Oil Pressure - Indicates engine oil pressure. The pressure reading will be greatest after starting a cold engine. Oil pressure will decrease as the engine warms while idling. As the engine speed is increased to full load speed, oil pressure will increase and stabilize. Minimum engine oil pressure is 160 kPa (23 psi) at low speed and at operating temperature, and 320 kPa (46 psi) at speeds above 650 rpm. Clock (Service) Hour Meter - Indicates the actual time in clock hours that the engine is running. Engine Oil Temperature - Indicates engine oil temperature after it has passed through the oil cooler. The oil cooler is thermostatically controlled and transfers the heat in the oil to the engine jacket water to maintain engine oil temperature at 85°C (185°F).If the cooling system cannot remove the necessary heat from the water, the engine oil cannot be properly cooled. Higher than normal oil temperature (85°C [185°F]) indicates a problem has occurred in the lubrication and/or cooling system, and cylinder heads, liners, pistons or bearings can be damaged. Fuel Pressure - Indicates pressure of the filtered fuel. As the fuel filter becomes plugged, there will be a noticeable reduction in the engine's performance. The fuel pressure range is 260 to 690 kPa (38 to 100 psi). Inlet Air Temperature - Measured after the aftercooler. Indicates inlet manifold air temperature. As the inlet air increases in temperature, the air expands, less oxygen is available to the cylinders, therefore less power is developed. As a result, at full governor position with a full load, the engine may be overloaded. Maximum inlet manifold air temperature is 90°C (194°F). Inlet Manifold Air Pressure - Indicates air pressure (turbocharger boost) in air plenum (air inlet manifold). Maximum inlet manifold air pressure at FULL LOAD can be 207 kPa (30 psi). Air Start Manifold - Indicates air pressure available for starting. Main air supply is regulated to 825 kPa (120 psi) minimum - 1550 kPa (225 psi) maximum (depending on the locomotive system pressure). Oil Filter Differential Pressure - Indicates the difference of oil pressure between the inlet side (dirty side) and the outlet side (clean side) of the oil filter. As the element becomes plugged, the difference in pressure between the two sides of the element will increase. Maximum oil filter differential pressure is 103 kPa (15 psi). Fuel Filter Differential Pressure - Indicates the difference of fuel pressure between the inlet side and the outlet side of the fuel filter elements. As the element becomes plugged, the difference in pressure between the two sides of the element will increase. Maximum fuel filter differential pressure is 69 kPa (10 psi). Air Restriction - (Air Cleaner Differential Pressure) Indicates the difference of air pressure between the inlet side (dirty side) and the engine side (clean side) of the air filter element. As the element becomes plugged, the difference in pressure between the two sides of the element will increase. The filters should be inspected frequently when restriction reaches 4 kPa (15 in) H2O and changed when restriction reaches 8 kPa (30 in) H2O. Exhaust Temperature Pyrometer (Individual Cylinder Exhaust Temperature) - Indicates exhaust gas temperature. The temperature reading is taken at the exhaust port of each cylinder head. The readings will vary slightly from each other. Nominal exhaust temperature is approximately 480°C (900°F) depending on load and rpm. Maximum exhaust temperature to trip alarm when using distillate fuel is 550°C (1022°F). Crankcase Pressure - Rapid changes in crankcase pressure is used as an indicator of piston, ring, and liner problems. Typical pressure readings should be 0.125 kPa (0.5 inch) H2O minimum to 1.0 kPa (4.0 inch) H2O maximum.Engine Controls
Emergency Stop - If the need for emergency engine shutdown occurs, push the emergency stop pushbutton. This will activate the fuel shutoff and the air intake shutoff if equipped. To release the Emergency Stop Pushbutton, pull out and rotate the button in the direction indicated on the button. Some Emergency Stop Pushbuttons can be pulled out to reset, not requiring any rotating.
Do not start the engine until the problem necessitating the emergency stop has been located and corrected.
Engine Prelube - Move the toggle switch from the neutral position to
