Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Engine Oil Level
Oil Level
Result: The engine oil is at the proper level.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The engine oil level is low.
Repair: Add engine oil in order to obtain the correct engine oil level. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil" for the recommendations of engine oil.
Start the engine. Inspect the exterior of the engine for oil leaks. Repair any oil leaks.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Supply Voltage at the Oil Level Sensor Connector
A. Disconnect the oil level sensor at the sensor connector.
B. Restore electrical power to the ECM.
C. Measure the voltage between the following wiring harness connector terminals for the oil level sensor:
- Terminal A (sensor supply) and Terminal B (sensor return)
D. Remove electrical power from the ECM.
5.0 0.2 VDC
Result: The voltage measurement is 5.0 0.2 VDC. The supply voltage is reaching the sensor.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The voltage measurement is not 5.0 0.2 VDC.
Repair: The sensor supply voltage is not reaching the sensor. There is a problem in the circuit for the sensor supply. Repair the wiring harness between the sensor and the ECM.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Short the Signal Wire to Ground on the Oil Level Sensor
A. Fabricate a jumper wire that is long enough to create a short circuit between two terminals at the oil level sensor harness connector. Crimp connector pins to each end of the jumper wire.
B. Install the jumper wire between the following wiring harness connector terminals for the oil level sensor:
- Terminal B (sensor return) and Terminal C (sensor signal)
C. Connect Cat ET.
D. Use Cat ET to monitor the status of the "Oil Level".
E. Remove the jumper wire. Connect the harness connector for the oil level sensor.
5 VDC
Result: The status changes when the jumper wire is installed.
Repair: Replace the failed oil level sensor.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: The status does not change when the jumper wire is installed.
Repair: The problem is between the ECM and the sensor connector. Repair the wiring harness.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
