Engine Wiring Harness Adapter
When replacing a 3176 Truck Engine (2YG engine serial number) with a Remanufactured Engine (5XN engine serial number), a 4P-5880 Harness Assembly (adapter) is required. The 4P-5880 Harness Assembly adapts the 40 pin Deutsch connector on the remanufactured engine to the two 9 Pin Deutsch connectors on the OEM wiring harness.Engine Monitoring Package (Optional)
The Engine Monitoring Package is a standard feature on the remanufactured engine. The engine monitoring mode determines the level of action taken by the engine's ECM in response to a potential engine damaging condition. The monitoring package will take a programmed action, based on input data from high coolant temperature, low oil pressure, or low coolant level (if coolant level sensor is installed and enabled). The customer specified engine monitoring parameters can be programmed as follows:Engine Monitoring Mode* (default)* OFF (alternative)* DERATE (alternative)* SHUTDOWN (alternative)Coolant Level Sensor Enable/Disable* ENABLED (default)* DISABLED (alternative)Engine Warning Lamp
If the customer wants the Engine Monitoring Package option, a red lamp must be installed in the truck cab.For wiring instructions, refer to "Warning Lamp Wiring Schematic" in this Special Instruction. The warning lamp (red) is not the same as the check engine lamp (amber). Do not install a BUZZER; only a warning lamp (red).OEM Coolant Level Sensor (Optional)
An OEM Coolant Level Sensor is optional and may be installed in the radiator top tank or shunt tank, if the port is available. If the OEM Coolant Level Sensor is not installed, the customer specified parameter "Coolant Level Sensor Enable/Disable" must be programmed to DISABLED.A wiring harness must be fabricated to connect the 4 pin Packard connector on the sensor to the OEM (P7) connector. A standard coolant level sensor extension wiring harness can be purchased from the OEM and modified for installation. Modify the extension harness by removing the OEM harness connectors and installing Deutsch sockets. The Deutsch sockets will plug into the proper OEM (P7) connector. For additional information, refer to the "Coolant Level Sensor Requirements" section in this Special Instruction.Engine Oil Suction Tube/Bell (Rear Sump Only)
A front sump oil pan is standard on the remanufactured engine. If a rear sump oil pan is required, the oil pan must be reconfigured. The same oil pan can be installed as either a front or rear sump (gasket is reusable). However, the oil suction tube/bell is not reversible. When converting to a rear sump oil pan, different options may be available depending on the remanufactured engine cylinder block casting part number. This part number is located on the right side of the engine block, behind the primary oil filter.Rear Oil Sump Part Requirements
To use the "Rear Oil Sump Part Requirements" chart, find the engine block casting number of the former engine. Then, obtain the engine block casting number from the new remanufactured engine. If the part numbers are the same within the column, transfer the parts. (Example, former engine uses a 9Y-6677 and new engine uses a 4P-7514.) If the part numbers are different, order the new parts. (Example, former engine uses a 9Y-6677 and new engine uses a 4P-5916.) Engine Oil Dipstick/Tube
The remanufactured engine is not equipped with an engine oil dipstick. The dipstick/tube should be transferred from the former engine. After the engine is completely installed in chassis, the dipstick must be calibrated. Since the remanufactured engine is shipped with no oil in the crankcase, the dipstick calibration can be done during the initial oil fill.Dipstick Calibration Procedure
1. The truck must be on a level surface.2. Drain engine oil, if necessary.3. Fill crankcase with 21 Liters (22 US qts) of oil. Allow 10 minutes for the oil to completely drain into sump.
Do not start the engine until instructed to in this procedure! Failure to follow this recommendation, will result in engine damage.
4. Remove the dipstick. The oil level should be at the "ADD" mark. If not, mark the actual oil level on the dipstick. This is now the correct "ADD" mark.5. Add an additional 3.8 Liters (4 US qts) of oil to the crankcase. Allow 10 minutes for the oil to completely drain into sump.6. Remove the dipstick. The oil level should be at the "FULL" mark on the full range dipstick. If not, mark the actual oil level on the dipstick. This is now the correct "FULL" mark.
After the "FULL" level is marked, if required, add additional oil to fill the auxiliary oil filters. If this oil is not added, engine damage may occur at startup.
7. Start the engine. Run the engine until it reaches normal operating temperature. Stop the engine and allow oil to drain back into sump (approximately 10 minutes).8. Remove the dipstick. Add enough oil to bring the oil level to the "FULL" mark on the full range dipstick.Jacobs Engine Brake (Optional)
The remanufactured engine is not equipped with a Jacobs Engine Brake. However, for ease of installation of an engine brake, cylinder head studs are already installed on the remanufactured engine. The Jacobs Housing Assembly and the Jacobs Electronic Control Group from the former engine (if equipped) may or may not be compatible with the new remanufactured engine.
Installing the incorrect Jacobs housing assembly on the remanufactured engine will cause major engine damage. Caterpillar's engine warranty does not cover engine failures resulting from damage caused by Jacobs Brakes. Jacobs warranty does not cover engine damage caused by improper brake installation or installation of the wrong model of Jacobs Brake.
Jacobs Housing Assembly
The remanufactured engine requires a Jacobs Model 317C or 317E engine brake. The Jacobs Model 317C and 317E engine brakes are NOT interchangeable with Jacobs Models 317, 317A, or 317B.Jacobs does offer a retrofit kit to upgrade a Jacobs Model 317A to a Model 317C (Jacobs part number 20641) or a Jacobs Model 317B to a Model 317C (Jacobs part number 20642). If the Jacobs Model 317C engine brake is transferred to the remanufactured engine, the brake should be rebuilt. Contact the local Jacobs Brake Distributor for information on rebuild (tune-up) kits. For additional information, refer to "Jacobs Brake and Control Group" section in this Special Instruction.
