TECHNICAL INFORMATION BULLETIN July 20, 2005
On-highway Truck Engine C9 (9DG1-04366)
Component Codes 1326, 0645
SUBJECT: Oil fill quantities and oil gauge tube replacement for a C9 On-highway Truck Engine (Country Coach motorhome application)
PROBLEM: Some C9 On-highway Truck Engines installed in Country Coach motorhome applications may be experiencing improper oil fill quantities and an improperly vented oil gauge tube.
SOLUTION: On engines 9DG1-04366, the oil gauge tube needs to be replaced with a 277-3003 oil gauge tube. The oil fill quantities have been reviewed and have been adjusted to the refill capacities listed in the table below.
Table 1

33 (qts) 30 (L)
31 (qts)The following procedure will help you verify the proper oil fill quantities, draining the oil, refilling the oil, and oil level gauge calibration.
The engine oil level will vary depending on the angle of the engine. The angle is defined as the front to back tilt of the engine. In Country Coach applications, the engine is installed at a 5° angle.
The oil level gauge markings must be verified in order to ensure that the markings are correct. Verify the oil level gauge markings at the first oil change.
Verify that the "ADD" mark and verify that the "FULL" mark on the oil level gauge is correct. Use the following procedure if the "ADD" and "FULL" marks are not correct.
The vehicle must be parked on a level surface in order to perform this maintenance procedure.
Operate the engine until normal operating temperature is achieved.
Stop the engine.
Remove the crankcase oil drain plugs. The oil drain plug from the deep portion of the oil pan must be removed.
Drain the oil from the crankcase for 20 minutes.
Note: Only remove the oil filter(s) if the engine is at normal maintenance interval. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct maintenance intervals.
Note: Your engine may be equipped with auxiliary oil filter(s). The auxiliary oil filter(s) require a different volume of oil. Refer to the OEM specifications for the auxiliary oil filter(s).
Remove the used oil filter(s).
Install the new oil filter(s).
Install the oil drain plugs. Tighten the oil drain plugs to 70 ? 15 N?m (50 ? 11 lb ft).
Note: The 3 (L) or 3 (qts) is the difference between the "ADD" and "FULL" mark on the oil level gauge.
Add engine oil into the crankcase. Refer to Table 1 for the proper quantity of oil to be added.
Start the engine and run the engine for 3 to 5 minutes.
Shut off the engine. Allow enough time for the oil to drain into the crankcase. Approximately 20 minutes should be allowed.
Check the oil level. Wait for several minutes and check the oil level again. Proceed after the oil level stops changing. Check the oil level on the oil level gauge to see if the oil level is at the "ADD" mark. If the oil level is not at the existing "ADD" mark, grind off the "ADD" mark. Use an engraving pen in order to engrave a new "ADD" level.
Add the additional 3 (L) or 3 (qts) of oil to the engine. This additional oil will bring the oil level to the "FULL" mark.
Allow enough time for the oil to drain into the crankcase.
Check the oil level. Wait for several minutes and check the oil level again. Proceed after the oil level stops changing. Check the oil level on the oil level gauge to see if the oil level is at the "FULL" mark. If the oil level is not at the existing "FULL" mark, grind off the "FULL" mark. Use an engraving pen in order to engrave a new "FULL" mark.
Start the engine and run the engine enough to ensure that the lubrication system is filled. Inspect the engine for oil leaks.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking again.
Stop the engine and allow enough time for the oil to drain into the crankcase.
Verify that the oil level is at the "FULL" mark.
Clean the underside of the engine with steam to remove existing oil residue.
Start the engine and run the engine to verify that the oil level is correct and the oil is not overflowing or leaking.
