Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
271-5 Action Alarm : Current Below Normal The engine's Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects an open circuit for the action alarm or the ECM detects a short to battery voltage for the action alarm.
The ECM can only detect this condition when the output driver is not activated. The code is logged.
The ECM will illuminate the check engine lamp. The ECM will pulse the action lamp at a rate of .5 Hz per second.
271-6 Action Alarm : Current Above Normal The engine's ECM detects a short in the circuit for the action alarm.
The ECM can only detect this condition when the output driver is activated. The action alarm is an audible alarm that notifies the operator of a serious problem with either the engine or the transmission. The action alarm is activated under the following conditions:
The engine has an active diagnostic code and the engine is running.
The engine has an active level 3 event code and the engine is running.
The transmission has an active diagnostic code and the engine is running.
The transmission has an active level 3 event code and the engine is running. The action alarm will be energized for three seconds for a start-up test whenever the keyswitch is turned from the OFF position to the ON position. The ECM provides a high side output driver for the action alarm. The most likely cause of a problem with the action alarm is the alarm. The next most likely cause is a problem with the wiring in the circuit for the action alarm. The least likely cause is a problem with the ECM.

Schematic for the engine's action alarm circuit
Test Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

J1/P1 ECM connector
Thoroughly inspect any of the connectors that are associated with the action alarm circuit. Refer to the Schematic of the engine for connector locations. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".

Terminal location at the P1 connector for the action alarm
(P1-11) Action alarm
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires for the action alarm circuit.
Check the torque of the allen head screw on the ECM connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points. Expected Result:All of the connectors, pins and sockets are completely coupled and/or inserted and the harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and connectors appear to be in good repair. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring need repair.Repair: Repair the wiring and/or the connectors. Replace parts, if necessary. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled. Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check for Proper Operation of the Action Alarm Circuit
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Listen for the action alarm. The ECM will activate the action alarm for three seconds.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Expected Result:The action alarm activates for three seconds after the keyswitch is turned to the ON position. Results:
OK - The action alarm activates for three seconds after the keyswitch is turned to the ON position.Repair: There does not appear to be a problem with the action alarm circuit at this time. The problem may have been related to a faulty connection in the harness. Carefully reinspect the connectors and wiring. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
Not OK - The action alarm does not activate when the keyswitch is turned to the ON position. Inspect the action alarm
