Introduction
This Special Instruction provides the procedure to install the 466-1958 Heater Kit, which is a single heater for the breather canister inlet. This is required when temperatures are expected below -18C (0F). This heater became standard equipment for machines built after the serial number effectivity listed in this document.Note: 0W-40 engine oil is required. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual. Usage of a block heater and heavy-duty battery are also recommended.Note: The 466-1959 Heater Kit is another crankcase breather heater that is installed in the outlet hose of the crankcase breather canister. This is also required when temperatures are expected below -18C (0F).Note: The latest machine software is required, which will elevate low idle in cold weather to increase engine temperature. The latest software also has the appropriate minimum fan speed settings. The minimum fan speed must be calibrated. This also requires installation of the optional demand fan. Refer to the last section of this document for this procedure and serial number effectivity when the demand fan became standard equipment.Note: In territories that operate in ambient temperatures of −32° C (−26° F) and colder, a rear door cover is also required. If hauling a machine with the engine running, the rear door cover is required when ambient temperatures are expected below 0C (32F). The following is the information for the rear door covers: For sales models 236D, 242D, 257D, and 259D, the rear door cover is 452-2243 Cover Kit as per Special Instruction, REHS8736, "Installing the Winter Cover Kit". For sales models 246D, 262D, 277D, 279D, 287D, and 289D, the rear door cover is 452-0239 Heater Kit as per Special Instruction, REHS8737, "Installing the 452-0239 Winter Cover Kit".Note: Not performing the above can result in freezing of the breather system and engine failure.Parts List

Install tube (6) using bolt (2) that is saved in Step 3. Install tube (6) to the valve cover hose using original hose clamp (1).
Install hose (7), heater (8), and hose (9) with hose clamp (11) and hose clamp (12). Ensure that heater (8) is positioned as shown in Illustration 3.
Install hose (5) using hose clamp (10).
Illustration 5 g03730677
Disconnect two-pin connector (14) and connect the heater harness.
Route the harness above the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) coolant hose. Route the harness to the breather hose that runs from the breather canister to the intake.
Install tie straps (15) to secure the connector on the front of the engine, to the EGR coolant hose, and to the breather hose. Refer to Illustration 5.
Connect the harness to the in-line heater.
Bundle and secure any excess harness. Ensure that the harness does not rub other engine components and is not in contact with the exhaust manifold.Machine Software Update
Flash the machine ECM with the 464-6052 Machine Software Gp or later version.Note: The machine software elevates idle speed during cold-weather operation, when the parking brake and the hydraulic lockout are both engaged.Note: If the coolant temperature is less than or equal to 5° C (41° F), then low idle is limited to 1400 rpm. If ambient air temperature is less than or equal to 0° C (32° F) or if coolant temperature is less than or equal to 70° C (158° F) for 7 minutes, then low idle is limited to 2000 rpm.Note: When the machine ECM is flashed, engine diagnostic codes will be created due to the loss of communication between the engine ECM and the machine ECM. These codes will show up as "CAN DATA LINK" codes. After flashing the machine ECM, turn the key switch OFF and back ON (engine not running) and these codes will change from active to logged. With the key switch ON (engine not running) clears the logged codes. If the codes still do not clear, ensure the "All ECM" box is NOT checked.Calibration Procedure for Minimum Fan Speed
The demand fan is a required component to complete this update to decrease the minimum engine fan speed. For the 246D - S/N:BYF, 262D - S/N:DTB, 277D - S/N:FMT, 279D - S/N:GTL, 287D - S/N:HMT, and 289D - S/N:TAW, the demand fan is standard. For the 236D - S/N:BGZ, 242D - S/N:DZT, 257D - S/N:EZW, and 259D - S/N:FTL, the demand fan is an option. For these models if the machine has the standard fan, the demand fan will need to be installed. Refer to 258-2579 Hydraulic Fan Motor and Mounting Gp in SIS web. After installing these components, use the Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool to change the configuration for the Demand Fan "Installed".
Calibrate the "Minimum Fan Speed" in the machine ECM.
