Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Remove the muffler assembly in order to access the fuel transfer pump. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly, "Remove and Install Muffler Assmebly".
Close the main fuel supply valve.

Note: For photographic reasons, one fuel hose assembly has been removed.
Loosen socket head screw (5) that holds the male connector (3) to the female connector (1). At this time, male connector (3) will separate from female connector (1) .

Note: For photographic reasons, the aftercooler has been removed.
Remove the two nuts (6) and washers that hold ground wire (7) to bracket (2) .
Remove two bolts (4) and washers that attach bracket (2) to the aftercooler.
Remove bolts (8) and washers that are holding the clips for the cable assembly to the aftercooler. Move cable assembly (9) in order to access the fuel transfer pump.Note: One of two bolts (8) is hidden behind bracket (2) in the photo.

Disconnect two fuel lines (10) from fuel pump (11). In order to keep any contaminants from the fuel lines, plug the openings immediately.

Remove four bolts (12) from the fuel transfer pump. Carefully, remove the fuel transfer pump from the engine. Plug the hole in the engine for the fuel transfer pump in order to prevent any oil from leaking.

Remove O-ring seal (13) from fuel transfer pump (11) .Installation Procedure

Lubricate the new O-ring seal (13) with clean engine oil. Install the O-ring seal (13) on the fuel transfer pump (11) .

Position the fuel transfer pump (11) on the engine, and install the four bolts (12). Tighten four bolts (12) to a torque of 50 5 N m (37 4 lb ft).

Install new O-ring seals on the fittings of fuel transfer pump (11). Connect two fuel lines (10) to the fuel transfer pump (11) .

Align the cable assembly (9) so that the two bolts (8) for the clips can be installed.
Align the bracket (2) with the holes in the engine and install the bolts and washers (4) .
Attach the ground wire (7) to bracket (2) and install the two nuts (6) and washers. Tighten the nuts (6) to the following torque10 3 N m (90 25 lb in).

Place connector (3) into connector (1) and tighten socket head screw (5) .
Install the muffler assembly.Reference: For more information about installing the muffler assembly, refer to the Service Manual module Disassembly and Assembly, "Remove and Install Muffler Assembly".
Open the main fuel supply valve. Prime the fuel system.Reference: For additional information about priming the fuel system, refer
