Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the allen head screw of each ECM connector for the proper torque. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely coupled and inserted. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and wiring appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the problem that has been found with the connectors and/or the wiring. If necessary, replace any damaged components. Ensure that all of the connector seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled. Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Verify Operation of the Engine Fan Reverse Switch
Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Restore the electrical power to the ECM.
Use Cat ET to check the status of the engine fan reverse switch while you operate the switch.Expected Result:The status changes accordingly as you operate the switch. Results:
OK - The status changes accordingly with the switch position. The switch circuit is OK. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - The status does not change with the switch position. There may be a problem with the switch. Proceed to Test Step 5.Test Step 3. Check the Circuit for Continuity
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Disconnect the J1/P1 ECM connector.
Measure the resistance between P1-10 and P1-18 on ECM connector P1.Expected Result:The resistance measures 36.6 1.6 Ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance measures 36.6 1.6 Ohms.Repair: There may be an intermittent problem. The problem may have been related to a faulty connection in the harness or in a connector. Carefully inspect the connectors and the wiring. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
Not OK - The resistance does not measure 36.6 1.6 Ohms. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 4. Check the Engine Fan Reversing Solenoid
Disconnect the harness connector for the engine fan reversing solenoid.
Measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 at the connector for the engine fan reversing solenoid. Measure the resistance of the coil of the engine fan reversing solenoid.Expected Result:The resistance measures 36.6 1.6 Ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance measures 36.6 1.6 Ohms.Repair: There is a problem in the harness between the ECM and the connector for the engine fan reversing solenoid. The problem may be related to a faulty connection in the harness or in a wire. Carefully inspect the connectors and the wiring. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".STOP
Not OK - The resistance does not measure 36.6 1.6 Ohms.Repair: Replace the engine fan reversing solenoid.STOPTest Step 5. Short the Harness at the Engine Fan Reverse Switch
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Fabricate a jumper wire that is long enough to short circuit two terminals of the harness connector for the engine fan reverse switch. Crimp connector pins to each end of the jumper wire.
Install the jumper wire between terminal 3 (engine fan reverse switch (N/O)) and terminal 2 (digital return) on the harness side of the connector for the engine fan reverse switch.
Restore the electrical power to the ECM.
Check the status of the engine fan reverse switch on Cat ET.The correct status of the switch is "On".
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Install the jumper wire between terminal 3 (engine fan reverse switch (N/C)) and terminal 2 (digital return) on the harness side of the connector for the engine fan reverse switch.
Restore the electrical power to the ECM.
Check the status of the engine fan reverse switch on Cat ET.The correct status of the switch is "Off".
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.Expected Result:The status changes correctly on Cat ET.Results:
OK - The status changes correctly.Repair: There is a problem with the switch. Replace the switch. Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOP
Not OK - The status does not change correctly. There is a problem in the wiring between the switch and the ECM. There may be a problem with the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 6.Test Step 6. Check the Operation of the Engine Fan Reverse Switch at the ECM
Remove the electrical power from the ECM.
Disconnect the J1/P1 ECM connector.
Fabricate three jumper wires that are long enough to connect terminals at the ECM connector. Crimp a connector pin to one end of each of the wires.
Remove the wire from terminal location P1-46 (engine fan reverse switch (N/O)) of the ECM connector. Install a jumper wire into this terminal location.
Remove the wire from terminal location P1-47 (engine fan reverse switch (N/C)) of the ECM connector. Install a jumper wire into this terminal location.
