Event Codes
Code and Description     Conditions which Activate the Code    System Response
101-15
Engine Crankcase Pressure : High - least severe (1)     The crankcase pressure is higher than the trip point and the delay time has expired.     The code is logged.
The ECM may derate the engine or shutdown the engine.
101-16
Engine Crankcase Pressure : High - moderate severity (2)
101-0
Engine Crankcase Pressure : High - most severe (3)
E1036(1) High Crankcase Pressure - least severe     The crankcase pressure is higher than the trip point and the delay time has expired.     The code is logged.
The ECM may derate the engine or shutdown the engine.
E1036(2) High Crankcase Pressure - moderate severity
E1036(3) High Crankcase Pressure - most severe    Probable Causes

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the order of the listed test steps.
Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps    Values    Results
1. Check the Engine Oil Level
A. Check the engine oil level.

Engine oil level

Result: The engine oil level is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The engine oil level is high.
Repair: Troubleshoot the cause of the incorrect oil level.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

2. Plugged OCV Filter or Tubing
A plugged OCV system and/or tubing will cause excessive crankcase pressure.
A. Check the OCV for plugging.
B. Check the tubing for plugging.
Plugged OCV and/or Tubing
Result: The OCV or tubing is plugged..
Repair: Replace the fumes disposal filter according to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fumes Disposal Filter Element - Replace". Remove any obstruction in the tubing.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: The OCV or tubing is not plugged.
Proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Faulty Sensor
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. Do not start the engine.
C. Remove the oil filler cap.
D. Monitor the crankcase pressure and the atmospheric pressure in Cat ET.

Crankcase pressure sensor

Result The crankcase pressure is within 3.5 kPa (0.5 psi) of the atmospheric pressure.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result The crankcase pressure is not within
3.5 kPa (0.5 psi) of the atmospheric pressure.
Repair: Replace the crankcase pressure sensor.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

4. Internal Engine Problem
Damaged pistons or rings can cause too much pressure in the crankcase. This condition will cause the engine to run rough. There will be more than the normal quantity of fumes (blowby) entering the CCV system. The CCV system can then more quickly become restricted, causing oil leakage at gaskets and seals that would not normally have leakage. Blowby can also be caused by worn valve guides or by a failed turbocharger seal.
A. To determine whether the piston rings leak, measure the crankcase blowby. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting for additional information.

Damaged or worn engine parts

Result There are worn or damaged engine parts.
Repair: Repair or replace the worn or damaged parts.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
