Information:

Table 1
Diagnostic Trouble Code
Code and Description Conditions which Activate the Code System Response
3607-31 Engine Emergency Shutdown Indication The engine is in the run mode or the cooldown mode and an emergency stop shutdown has been initiated. The code is logged.
The gas shutoff valve, the fuel actuator, and the ignition to the engine is disabled.
The red stop lamp is activated.
The engine is shut down.
5272-31 Unexpected Engine Shutdown The engine is in the run mode and the engine speed drops below the 100 rpm. The code is logged.
The red stop lamp is activated.
The engine is shut down.
This engine event is latched.(1)
(1) The engine control switch must be cycled to the OFF position prior to restarting the engine.
Unburned gas in the air inlet and exhaust system may ignite when the engine is started. Personal injury and/or property damage may result. Before starting an engine that may contain unburned gas, purge the unburned gas from the air inlet and exhaust system. Refer to the topic on purging unburned gas in the "Starting the Engine" section.
The ignition is immediately terminated when an emergency stop button is pressed. Unburned gas remains in the air inlet and exhaust system.Probable Causes for a 3607-31
Emergency shutdown that is initiated by the operator
Faulty circuit for the emergency stop switch
Faulty emergency shutdown switchProbable Causes for a 5272-31
Engine overload
Excessive load at start-up
Faulty fuel shutoff valve
Incorrect mode switch inputs
Starting motor relay
Incorrect settings for the system configuration parametersRecommended Actions for a 3607-31 Code
Faulty Circuit for the Emergency Stop
Note: The circuit for the emergency stop circuit must remain grounded in order for the engine to run.Inspect the wiring between the emergency shutdown switch and the connector at the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Look for damage and/or corrosion. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to the diagnosis of intermittent conditions in the harness wiring and/or connectors.Faulty Emergency Shutdown Switch
Inspect the emergency shutdown switch for evidence of damage that has been caused by vibration. Disassemble the switch. Inspect the components for looseness, for cracks, and for abrasion. Use an ohmmeter and toggle the switches in order to check for proper electrical operation.Replace any faulty components.Recommended Actions for a 5272-31 Code
Engine Overload
Check the driven equipment for the reason for the overload. Ensure that the problem has been corrected. Reset the control system. Resume normal operation.Excessive Load at Start-up
Ensure that the engine is cranking at an adequate speed during starting.Check that the load is not excessive during starting. Reduce the load. If necessary, disengage the driven equipment and test the engine.Check for a problem with the parasitic loads that are on the engine. Check the condition of all engine driven accessories. Perform the necessary repairs.Faulty Fuel Shutoff Valve
Use Cat ET to check for the following diagnostic codes:
632-5 Engine Fuel Shutoff Valve #1 : Current Below Normal
632-6 Engine Fuel Shutoff Valve #1 : Current Above NormalIf one of these codes is active or one of the codes has been recently logged, refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Shutoff - Test" for the proper troubleshooting procedure. Perform the necessary repairs.Inputs for the Mode of Operation to the ECM
Use Cat ET to check for the following diagnostic codes:
158-2 Keyswitch Battery Potential : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect
3542-3 Requested Engine Control Mode : Voltage Above Normal
3542-4 Requested Engine Control Mode : Voltage Below NormalIf any of these codes is active or one of the codes has been recently logged, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Power Supply - Test" for the proper troubleshooting procedure. Perform the necessary repairs.Starting Motor Relay
Troubleshoot for the following diagnostic codes:
677-5 Engine Starter Motor Relay : Current Below Normal
677-6 Engine Starter Motor Relay : Current Above NormalIf either of these codes is active or one of the codes has been recently logged, refer to Troubleshooting, "Starting - Test" for the proper troubleshooting procedure. Perform the necessary repairs.Incorrect Settings for the System Configuration Parameters
Check the settings for each of the system configuration parameters that are in the group for Start/Stop Control. Pay specific attention to the settings for the following parameters:
"Crank Terminate RPM" parameter
"Cycle Crank Time" parameter
"Crank Duration" parameter
"Driven Equipment Delay Time" parameterThese parameters are set up at the factory with optimum values for this engine. Refer to Systems Operation, "System Configuration Parameters" for information that is related to the definitions and the default settings that are for these parameters. If the parameters have been changed from the factory settings, determine the reason for the change.
