Installation of the exhaust diverter valve and muffler will decrease noise from the engine exhaust when the body is in the raised position. The diverter valve can also be manually set to send exhaust gases through the muffler all the time, when exhaust heat is not needed through the body during warm temperatures.769C, 773B
(1) Remove the existing elbows, piston, springs, plate, four studs and adjustment screw; these are not needed again. With the correct tap, clean all bolt threads. Install 2G9339 Shaft (1) as shown to make sure the shaft moves free in the bore. (2) Install 2G9207 Lever (2) on 2G9344 Plate Assembly (3) with S175 Pin (4) and a 3B4617 Cotter Pin. Install a 1B8706 Key in shaft (1) and install the complete assembly on the shaft as shown with an S1588 Bolt at location (A). Install a 1B8706 Key at location (B). Install 6G10 Lever (5) with an S1588 Bolt (6). Install 6G254 Spring (7) as shown. (3) Install 2G9177 Ring (8) on 2G9155 Pipe (9). Install 2G9172 Housing (10) on pipe (9). Install three 9D2836 Locks (11) with L1351 Bolts and 3B4506 Lockwashers. Put one lock (11) in cutout (12) of housing (10) and pipe (9) as shown. This will keep the two sections in correct alignment. Install six 6G1092 Springs (13) as shown. (4) Assemble 6G1293 Yoke (14) to 6G1258 Rod Assembly (15) with a 1B4430 Nut (16) and 2G9209 Spring (17) as shown. Put the assembly in position and connect yoke (14) to lever (5) with an S175 Pin and 3B4617 Cotter Pin. Install pipe assembly (18) to box assembly (19) with four 6H1717 Bolts (20). Install S1585 Bolt (21) with a 5P8245 Washer. (5) On the truck body exhaust inlet opening, install four 3D490 Studs (22) and 2G9141 Plate (23) with 1D4719 Nuts and 5P8245 Washers. Remove the existing setscrew and install a 3B3614 Setscrew (24) with a 1D4719 Nut. Install the complete assembly on the exhaust outlet with four S1595 Bolts (25) and 7D1649 Washers. Do not tighten bolts (25) at this time. (6) Connect spring (7) as shown to 2G9238 Cover Assembly (26) and install one L1351 Bolt (27) and 5M2894 Washer. Move the cover into position and install half of the remainder of bolts and washers as shown. (7) With 6G10 Lever (5) in the position shown, adjust 6G1293 Yoke (14) until pin (28) is at the dimension shown. Adjust setscrew (24) (installed earlier) to get a 1.6" (41) movement of housing (10) as the body lowers. Remove the bolts from cover assembly (26); tighten bolts (25) and again install the cover assembly and all of the bolts. To manually set the valve to send exhaust gases through the muffler all of the time, remove bolt (27) from existing location (A); move rod assembly (15) to the position shown and again install bolt (27).Operation Check
1) While the body is slowly lowered, 2G9172 Housing (10) must make contact with the truck body before 6G10 Lever (5) starts to move; lever (5) must move over the center position before the body stops.2) When the body is raised, lever (5) must move over the center position and close 2G9344 Plate (3) before the truck body moves out of contact with 2G1972 Housing (10).3) If 6G10 Lever (15) does not move over the center position, adjust 6G1293 Yoke (14).Installation Of Muffler Group
Except for a difference in some part numbers, the procedure for installation of the muffler is the same on the 769C and 773B Trucks. Illustrations are shown on the 773B Truck. (1) Install 2G9255 Shield (1) with four S1594 Bolts, 3B4506 Lockwashers and 4B4278 Washers. Install 2G9686 Plate (2) with two L1351 Bolts, 3B4506 Lockwashers and 5M2894 Washers. Do not tighten the bolts at this time. Install muffler (3) with 4N9330 Clamp (4), 2B947 Bolt and 1B5357 Nut. Install 2G548 Brace (5). Install 2G9684 Strap Assembly (6) and 2G9258 Strap (7) with bolts and nuts. Tighten all clamp bolts to a torque of 18 5 lb.ft. (25 7 N m). Install 2G9583 Pipe (8) with 4N9330 Clamp (9), bolts and nuts.777
Except for a difference in some part numbers, the procedure for assembly and installation of the diverter valve on the 777 Truck is basically the same as on the 769C and 773B; see the topic.Modification Of Hand Rail Assembly
(1) Cut the existing hand rail at locations (A) at approximately the dimension shown and remove center section (B). Move section (C) forward and weld to section (D) as shown.Installation Of Muffler Group
(1) Install 6G1210 Support (1), 6G4852 Bar (2) and 6G4851 Bar (3) with bolts, washers and nuts. Install 7N9047 Muffler (4) with 2P7418 Clamp (5) and 6G1039 Strap (6), nuts and bolts. Tighten clamp (5) and strap (6) to a torque of 18 5 lb.ft. (25 7 N m). Install 6G1273 Pipe Assembly (7) with two 2P7418 Clamps (8), bolts and nuts. (2) Install 2G8003 Guard Assembly (9) with ten S1595 Bolts and 7D1649 Washers.
