Diagnostic Codes Table
Description     Conditions which Generate this Code     System Response
E264(3) Emergency Stop Activated     The engine's Electrical Control Module (ECM) detects an open on the inputs for the emergency stop switch.     The air shutoff solenoid is activated for one second. Injection is disabled until power to the ECM is cycled. The code is logged.    The ECM has two inputs for the protection system for the engine. These inputs are for the emergency stop switch. In this application, the ECM is the engine governor. The ECM does not monitor the protection system. The Marine "Monitoring System II (MMSII)" or the "Engine Control Panel (ECP)" monitors the system. The Marine "Monitoring System II (MMSII)" or the "Engine Control Panel (ECP)" shuts down the engine in an emergency situation. The ECM shuts down the engine if an engine overspeed occurs. In this application, the inputs for the emergency stop are not used. The inputs are grounded inside the control harness. This disables the engine's emergency stop system. The emergency stop system will remain disabled unless the ground connection is lost. If the ground connection is lost, the event code E264(3) will be generated. The electrical power to the input for the keyswitch must be turned OFF for 15 seconds in order to reset the engine's ECM after an engine overspeed condition.

Location of ECM connectorsTest Step 1. Check for an Active Event Code
Restore electrical power to the ECM.
Start Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET).
Check for an active E264 event code.Expected Result:The E264 event code is active. Results:
OK - The E264 event code is active. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. Check for an Open Circuit in the Wires to the ECM from the Emergency Stop Circuit
Disconnect the J1/P1 ECM connector.
Measure the resistance between P1-23 at ECM connector P1 and engine ground.
Measure the resistance between P1-28 at ECM connector P1 and engine ground.Expected Result:The resistance measurements indicate an open circuit. Results:
OK - The resistance measurements indicate an open circuit.Repair: If the resistance measurements indicate an open circuit, repair the wires between the ECM and the splice to the −Battery that is in the harness.STOP
Not OK - The resistance measurements do not indicate an open circuit. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. Install a Jumper Wire at the Inputs to the ECM from the Emergency Stop Circuit
Remove electrical power from the ECM.
Disconnect ECM connector J1/P1.
Remove wire 344-GY from the ECM connector P1-23. Install a wire jumper with a socket on one end into P1-23. Do not allow the end of the wire jumper to contact any other wire in the harness or engine ground.
Remove wire 344-GY from the ECM connector P1-28. Install a wire jumper with a socket on one end into P1-28. Do not allow the end of the wire jumper to contact any other wire in the harness or engine ground.
Restore electrical power to the ECM.
Observe the status of the emergency stop on Cat ET.
Fabricate a jumper wire.Connect the wire jumpers in socket P1-23 and P1-28 to engine ground.
Observe the status for the emergency stop on Cat ET.
Remove electrical power from the ECM. Restore the wiring and the connectors to the original configuration.Expected Result:The status for the emergency stop reads "ON" when the jumper wire is not installed. The status for the emergency stop reads "OFF" when the jumper wire is installed. Results:
OK - The status for the emergency stop is displaying the proper state. The problem is not with the ECM.Repair: If the status of the emergency stop is active and the emergency stop is not activated, the likely cause is an open circuit in one of the wires. Check the wire for continuity between the splice to the −Battery that is in the harness and the ECM.STOP
Not OK - The status for the emergency stop is not displaying the proper state.Repair: Replace the ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Replacing the ECM".STOP
