Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
51-9
Engine Throttle Position : Abnormal Update Rate The Electronic Control Module (ECM) did not receive the required message from the throttle actuator. The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is illuminated.
The red stop lamp is illuminated.
1442-9
Engine Fuel Valve 1 Position : Abnormal Update Rate The ECM did not receive the required message from the throttle actuator. The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is illuminated.
The red stop lamp is illuminated.
3221-9
Aftertreatment #1 Intake Wide-Range O2 Reading Stable : Abnormal Rate The ECM is not communicating properly with the oxygen sensor at the catalyst inlet, over the CAN data link. The code is logged.
3231-9
Aftertreatment #1 Outlet Wide-Range O2 Reading Stable : Abnormal Rate The ECM is not communicating properly with the oxygen sensor at the catalyst outlet, over the CAN data link. The code is logged.
3542-9
Requested Engine Control Mode : Abnormal Update Rate The parameter for Engine State Control Input Configuration is set to "CAN Input".
The ECM did not receive the required message from the engine control switch. The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is illuminated.
The red stop lamp is illuminated.
The engine is shut down. The CAN data link is used to communicate information between the ECM and other control modules that are on the engine. Use this procedure to troubleshoot problems with the CAN data link. This procedure identifies the following problems:
Faulty connectors
Missing termination resistors
Short circuits
Open circuits
Faulty display panelA -9 code that is related to any specific control module may be caused by the power supply circuit to the control module. Be sure to check that the suspect control module is receiving the power before you troubleshoot the circuit for the CAN data link. If you suspect that a power supply circuit may be the cause of the -9 code, troubleshoot the power supply problem first.Note: This engine can be configured by the customer to allow the engine control status to be read from the CAN data link. The parameter for Engine State Control Input Configuration must be set to "CAN Input" for this control. Customer connections for the CAN data link must be made at the terminal strip that is inside the display panel. The customer must provide the control switch, the wiring, and the termination resistor for this configuration.A problem with the CAN data link is probably caused by the following problems:
Short circuit to ground
Open circuit in the harness
Short circuit to another voltage sourceThe next likely cause is a problem with a control module that is connected to the data link. The least likely cause is a problem with the ECM.

Thoroughly inspect connectors (1) and (2) that are for the actuators. Also, thoroughly inspect connectors (4), (5), (6), and (10). Inspect the connectors for termination resistor (8) and Messenger (9). Check the connections that are for the termination resistor that is in the box for the display panel. Ensure that you inspect the interconnect harness from the engine to the display panel for damage. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
