start by:a) remove front timing gear cover1. On industrial engines only, drain the cooling system.2. Turn the crankshaft clockwise (as seen from the front of the engine) to top dead center compression stroke No. 1 piston. See LOCATING TOP DEAD CENTER COMPRESSION POSITION FOR NO. 1 PISTON in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.3. Install the camshaft timing pins in the right and left inlet camshafts. 4. Remove cluster gear (1). Remove the cluster gear thrust washers from the cylinder block and from the front timing gear cover. 5. Use tooling (B) to remove the bearing from the cluster gear. 6. Remove the fuel line clamp mounting bolts (4) and (2) from the right aftercooler housing and from the left aftercooler housing.7. Remove the fuel line clamp mounting bolt (3) from the engine front lifting bracket.8. Disconnect the turbocharger heat shield water return line (5) from the top of the water temperature regulator housing on marine engines only.9. On marine engines only, remove right and left exhaust manifold front water outlet lines.10. Disconnect the water temperature gauge sending unit from the top of the water temperature regulator housing. 11. On industrial engines only, remove the right and left aftercooler vent line (6) and (9).12. Remove the aftercooler water inlet elbows (8) and (11) on industrial engines, and the aftercooler sea water outlet lines on marine engines.13. Remove water bypass line mounting bolts (10).14. Remove the water temperature regulator housing water inlet line mounting bolts (14) and (16). 15. Remove the oil filter housing and fuel filter housing support bracket (15).16. Fasten a hoist to the water temperature regulator inlet pipe (7), and remove the two water temperature regulator mounting bolts (12) and (13). Remove the water temperature regulator housing. Weight is approximately 130 lb. (59 kg). 17. Remove bolts (17), nuts and locks.18. Remove front timing gear plate (18). Weight is approximately 38 lb. (17 kg). 19. Remove oil line (19).20. Remove the camshaft drive idler gear retaining shaft mounting bolts (20) and lock.21. Remove the shaft and the camshaft drive idler gear (21).22. Use tooling (A) to remove the bearing from the camshaft drive idler gear.Install Front Timing Gears And Plate (Earlier)
1. Use tooling (A) to install the bearing in the camshaft drive idler gear with the notches in the bearing in alignment with the notches in the gear within 2°. The bearing must not extend beyond either face of the gear. Put clean SAE 30 oil on the bearing and gear retaining shaft. 2. Put idler gear (1) and shaft (2) in position on the engine, and install the retaining bolts and lock. Install the oil line. 3. Install a new gasket for the timing gear plate. Cut the bottom of the gasket even with the bottom of the cylinder block. Put timing gear plate (3) in position and install the bolts, nuts and locks that hold it in place.4. Fasten a hoist to the water temperature regulator housing and put it in position on the engine. Install the bolts that hold it in place. 5. Install the oil filter housing and fuel filter housing support bracket. Connect the water inlet lines (5) to the regulator housing.6. Connect the water bypass line (4) to the water temperature regulator housing. Install the aftercooler water inlet elbows on industrial engines, and the aftercooler sea water outlet lines on marine engines.7. On industrial engines only, install the right and left aftercooler vent lines.8. Connect the water temperature gauge sending unit to the top of the water temperature regulator housing.9. On marine engines only, install the exhaust manifold front water outlet lines. 10. Connect the turbocharger heat shield water return line (6) to the top of the regulator housing on marine engines only.11. Install fuel line clamp mounting bolt (7) in the engine front lifting bracket.12. Install the fuel line clamp mounting bolts in the right and left aftercooler housings. 13. Use tooling (B) to install the bearing in the cluster gear. Put clean SAE 30 oil on the bearing.14. Install the cluster gear thrust washers in the cylinder block and in the front timing gear cover. 15. Install the cluster gear (8) on the engine with the "V" mark on the idler gear in alignment with the "V" mark on the crankshaft gear.
Always be sure the No. 1 piston is at the top dead center compression stroke, and the timing pins are installed in the timing grooves in the left and right inlet camshafts before the cluster gear is installed. The engine can be damaged if this procedure is not followed.
16. Remove the timing pins from the right and left inlet camshafts, and install the pins in their storage positions.17. On industrial engines only, fill the cooling system.end by:a) install front timing gear cover
