Schematic for the digital supply
Test Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Illustration 3 g01141049
Location of the J1/P1 ECM connectors (typical left side engine view)
Thoroughly inspect the J1/P1 ECM connectors, the machine connectors, and the connectors for the decelerator position sensor. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.

Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector and the sensor connectors that are associated with the active diagnostic code.
Check the allen head screw for each of the ECM connectors and the machine connectors for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for the correct torque values.
Check the harness and wiring for abrasions and for pinch points from the sensor back to the ECM. Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets are completely inserted and coupled. The harness and wiring are free of corrosion, of abrasion, and of pinch points. Results:
OK - The harness and connectors appear to be OK. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - There is a problem in the connectors and/or wiring.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are completely coupled.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Check for Active Diagnostic Codes
Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Monitor the active diagnostic code screen on Cat ET. Check and record any active diagnostic codes. Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.Check for one of the following active diagnostic codes:
41-03
41-04
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Expected Result:One of the diagnostic codes that is listed above is not active. Results:
OK - No diagnostic code for the digital supply is active.Repair: There may be an intermittent electrical problem in the harness or in a connector. If an intermittent problem is suspected, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to troubleshooting the problem.STOP
Active 41-03 - A 41-03 diagnostic code is active. Proceed to Test Step 3.
Active 41-04 - A 41-04 diagnostic code is active. Proceed to Test Step 4.Test Step 3. Check for a Voltage on the +8 V Supply Wire at the Sensor Connector
Disconnect the connector for the decelerator position sensor at the sensor.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage between terminals A and B on the harness side of the sensor connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Connect the sensor connectors. Expected Result:The voltage is 8.0 0.5 VDC.Results:
OK - The voltage is 8.0 0.5 VDC.Repair: The voltage is correct. Replace all wires to the original configuration. Clear all diagnostic codes. There may be an intermittent electrical problem in the wiring harness or in a connector. If an intermittent problem is suspected, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for information that is related to troubleshooting intermittent electrical problems.STOP
Not OK - The voltage is not 8.0 0.5 VDC. The voltage is not incorrect. There is a problem in the wiring harness or in a connector between the sensor connector and the ECM connector. There may be a problem with the ECM. Proceed to Test Step 5.Test Step 4. Disconnect the +8 V Sensor and Check for Active Diagnostic Codes
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Monitor the active diagnostic code screen on Cat ET. Check and record any active diagnostic codes. Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.
Disconnect the connectors for the decelerator position sensor at the sensor.
Wait for 30 seconds after the sensor is disconnected. Check for an active diagnostic code on Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Expected Result:The 41-04 diagnostic code deactivates. Results:
OK - The 41-04 diagnostic code deactivates. The diagnostic code is not active after the sensor is disconnected.Repair: Reconnect the sensor. If the problem returns, replace the sensor. Restore the wiring to the original configuration. Clear all diagnostic codes. Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.STOP
Not OK - The 41-04 diagnostic code remains active after the connectors are disconnected. Leave the sensor disconnected. Proceed to Test Step 5.Test Step 5. Check the +8 V Supply Wire for a Short to Engine Ground or a Short to another Wire in the Harness
Disconnect the J1/P1 and J2/P2 ECM connectors.
Leave the digital sensor disconnected from the sensor connector. Note: Wiggle the harness during the following measurements in order to reveal any intermittent short condition.
Measure the resistance between P1-4 (+8 V digital supply) and every terminal on ECM connector P1 and ECM connector P2.
Measure the resistance between P1-4 (+8 V digital supply) and engine ground. Expected Result:An open circuit exists for all measurements. Results:
OK - An open circuit exists for all measurements. There is not a short in the engine harness or a short to engine ground. Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK - At least one of the measurements did not indicate that an open circuit existed. Repair: The +8 V digital supply wire is shorted in the engine harness or the +8 V digital supply wire is shorted to engine ground. Repair the wiring harness or replace the wiring harness. Clear all logged diagnostic codes. Replace all wires to the original configuration. Verify t
