Test Step 1. Check the Battery Voltage
Measure no-load battery voltage at the battery terminals. Expected Result:The battery voltage should be no less than 11.0 volts for a 12 volt system. The battery voltage should be no less than 22.0 volts for a 24 volt system. Results:
OK - Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - The battery voltage is below normal.Repair: Recharge the batteries or replace the batteries. Use the electronic service tool to clear any logged diagnostic codes and then verify that the repairs have eliminated the fault. STOPTest Step 2. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and Wiring

Thoroughly inspect the following terminal connections on the P40 Fuel Injection Pump Connector:
P40:6 Pump Supply -
P40:7 Pump Supply +Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
Inspect the terminals on the VLPM connector.
On applications that have a 31 pin MIC, thoroughly inspect the following terminal connections on the P20/J20 Machine Interface Connector.
P20: 3 Pump Power Control
P20: 4 Pump Supply -
P20: 8 Pump Supply +
On applications that have a 70 pin MIC, thoroughly inspect the following terminal connections on the P20/J20 Machine Interface Connector.
P20: 42 Pump Power Control
P20: 48 Pump Supply +
P20: 58 Pump Supply -
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the 31 pin MIC that are associated with the following connections:
P20:3 Pump Power Control
P20:4 Pump Supply -
P20:8 Pump Supply +
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the 70 pin MIC that are associated with the following connections:
P20:42 Pump Power Control
P20:48 Pump Supply +
P20:58 Pump Supply -
Check the ECM connector (Allen head screw) for the correct torque of 6.0 N m (55 lb in).
Check the harness and wiring for abrasions and for pinch points from the battery to VLPM and from the ECM and the fuel pump. Also, check the harness and wiring for abrasions and for pinch points from the keyswitch to the ECM. Expected Result:All connectors, pins, and sockets should be completely coupled and/or inserted. The harness and wiring should be free of corrosion, abrasion, and/or pinch points. Results:
OK - Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - There is a fault in the wiring or connectors. Repair the wiring and/or connectors or replace the wiring and/or connectors. Verify that the repair has eliminated the fault. STOPTest Step 3. Check the Supply Voltage at the Fuel Injection Pump

Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the P40 connector from the fuel injection pump.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Measure the voltage between P40:7 Pump Supply + and P40:6 Pump Supply -. Expected Result:The measured voltage is between 11.0 VDC and 13.5 VDC for a 12 volt system and between 22.0 VDC and 27.0 VDC for a 24 volt system with no suspected intermittent faults. Results:
OK - The voltage is within the limits. Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK - The voltage is below the limits. Proceed to Test Step 5.Test Step 4. Check the Drop in the Supply Voltage at the Fuel Injection Pump
