Start By:a. remove air cleaner housing. The following illustrations are of a D9L but the procedure is the same for a D10N.1. Remove the hood and muffler. The weight of the hood is approximately 225 Kg (500 lb.). The weight of the muffler is approximately 79 Kg (175 lb.).2. Drain the level of coolant in the radiator below the level of the turbocharger. 3. Remove the nuts and bolts that hold support assembly (1) to the lower support. Pull elbow (2) and support assembly (1) out of the turbocharger and remove them as a unit from the machine. 4. Remove coupling (3) from the turbocharger exhaust elbow. 5. Disconnect water line (4), water line (8), oil line (5) and oil line (7) from the turbocharger cartridge housing.6. Remove the top half of shield assembly (6) from the turbine housing. 7. Loosen clamp (9) and elbow (10) from the turbine housing. 8. Remove the bolts and nuts that hold turbocharger (11) to the exhaust manifold. Remove the bolt and washer that hold the turbocharger on pipe (12).9. Fasten a hoist to turbocharger (11) with tool (A). Pull the turbocharger off pipe (12) and remove it from the machine. The weight of turbocharger (11) is 25 kg (55 lb.). The following steps are for the installation of the turbocharger.10. Make sure the O-ring seal is installed on the end of pipe (12).11. Fasten a hoist to turbocharger (11) with tool (A). Put turbocharger (11) and the gasket in position on pipe (12) and the exhaust manifold. Install the bolt and washer to hold the turbocharger on pipe (12).12. Put 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound on the threads of the bolts. Install the bolts and nuts to hold the turbine housing to the exhaust manifold. Tighten the bolts and nuts to a torque of 55 5 N m (41 4 lb.ft.).13. Install elbow (10) in the turbine housing and tighten the clamp to hold it.14. Make sure the strainer assembly is installed in the oil supply hole in the turbocharger cartridge housing. Connect the gaskets and oil lines (5) and (7) to the cartridge housing.15. Connect the gasket and water lines (4) and (8) to the turbocharger cartridge housing.16. Install top half of shield assembly (6) over the turbocharger.17. Install the seal rings and coupling (3) on the exhaust elbow.18. Install the O-ring seals on the elbow for air cleaner housing support (1). Install the elbow and support (1) on the engine.19. Fill the cooling system with coolant to the correct level.20. Make sure the pins are removed from the fire suppression agent cylinder levers so the fire suppression system can be activated if necessary.21. Install the hood and muffler.End By: a. install the air cleaner housing.Disassemble And Assemble Turbocharger
Start By: a. remove turbocharger 1. Put the turbocharger in position on tool group (A) as shown. Put marks on the three housings of the turbocharger for correct installation and alignment at assembly.2. Loosen clamp (2) and remove compressor housing (1) and the clamp from the cartridge assembly. 3. Remove heat shield (6) from the cartridge housing. Loosen clamp (3) and remove cartridge assembly (5) from turbine housing (4).
To prevent a bent shaft, do not put a side force on the turbine shaft when the compressor wheel nut is loosened.
4. Put the end of the turbine shaft in tooling (B). Use a 5S9566 Sliding T-Wrench and a universal joint and socket to remove nut (15) that holds compressor wheel (14) on the turbine shaft.5. Use a press and push turbine shaft and wheel assembly (10) out of compressor wheel (14) and the cartridge housing. Remove compressor wheel (14) from the cartridge housing.6. Remove shroud (9) and seal ring (11) from turbine shaft and wheel assembly (10).7. Bend the tabs of locks (12) from bolts (13) and remove bolts (13).8. Remove backplate assembly (6) from the cartridge housing. Make a note of the position of the oil holes in the backplate assembly and cartridge housing (20) for correct alignment at assembly.9. Push spacer (16) out of its bore in backplate (6). Remove seal rings (17) from spacer (16).10. Remove thrust collar (18) from cartridge housing (20).11. Remove thrust bearing (7) from cartridge housing (20). If the bearings are to be used again, put identification on them as to their location for correct assembly.12. Remove bearing (19) and the washer from cartridge housing (20).13. Remove O-ring seal (8) from cartridge housing (20).14. Use tool (C) to remove snap rings (21) from cartridge housing (20).15. Remove bearing (23) and the washer. Use tool (C) and remove snap ring (24) from cartridge housing (20).16. Check all the parts of the turbocharger for damage. If any parts are damaged, use new parts for replacement. See Special Instruction Form No. SMHS6854 for turbocharger reconditioning. Also, see Guidelines For Reusable Parts, Form No. SEBF8018. The following steps are for the assembly of the turbocharger.17. Make sure that all the oil passages in the turbocharger cartridge housing are clean and free of dirt and foreign material. Do not put oil on any parts of the turbocharger until after the compressor wheel has been installed. After the turbocharger has been assembled, put clean engine oil into the oil inlet of the turbocharger.
Make sure the snap rings that hold bearings (19) and (23) in position in cartridge housing (20) are installed with the round edge of the outside diameter toward the bearing.
18. Use tool (C) and install snap ring (22). Install the washer then bearing (23). Use tool (C) and install snap ring (24) in cartridge housing (20).19. Use tool (C) and install snap ring (21) in the cartridge housing. Install the washer and bearing (19) until the washer makes contact with snap ring (21). The washers must be installed on the turbine end of bearings (19) and (23).20. Install thrust bearing (7) over the dowels in the cartridge housing. Make sure the grooves in bearing (7) are toward the outside as shown.21. Install O-ring seal (8) in the groove of the
