Description
The digital pyrometer with alarm is an electronic instrument designed to monitor temperature at nine separate points using industry standard thermocouple probes. This device allows the readout of up to eight engine exhaust temperature locations. Two devices are used on engines with more than eight cylinders.A front panel push button switch allows the user to select the desired thermocouple input. The location selected and the monitored temperature are displayed continuously on the LCD display. The channel "0" thermocouple input is continuously compared against a high limit setpoint while providing readout and monitoring of high limit protection for the exhaust stack on the channel "0".The high limit setpoint input is set by the operator from the front of the instrument. If the setpoint is exceeded, an output switch is activated to ground. Operating power is from 12-125 VDC.
Digital PyrometerOperation
Readout Selector Switch - The pyrometer cylinder readout can be configured for use on in-line engines of 6 to 8 cylinders reading 0 through 8 or for use on vee engines of 12 to 16 cylinders where two devices are used, one on each bank of the engine. On vee engines, one device is set for V - even and the other for V - odd to conform to the standard cylinder numbering system. This switch is located on the lower left side of the device back. This switch is of a locking type to prevent accidental actuation. To select a new switch position, lift upwards on the toggle while actuating. Release the toggle to lock in a new position. Temperature Readout - The device must be supplied from a suitable power source wired in accordance with the attached Wiring Diagrams. Each time the device is powered up, it will start reading the temperature value of channel "0". To read the temperature values on the other eight channels (1 through 8), push the "PUSH TO ADVANCE" button (1) on the front panel. The display will advance to the next successive point and read the temperature at the location indicated on the display.Alarm Setpoint Adjustment
The high temperature limit setpoint for monitored channel "0" is read by depressing the "PUSH TO READ" button (2).To adjust the setting, use a small screwdriver to turn the adjustment (3) until the display readout matches the desired temperature. Rotating the adjustment clockwise (CW) increases the setpoint. The output switch will be activated when the display readout exceeds the preset number. When this occurs, the alarm horn will sound and "A-3" will flash on Module # 3. Pushing touch buttons 1, 2 or 3 will silence the horn. The setpoint value is retained indefinitely until altered. For additional information, see the Description of Alarm Systems section of this publication.Construction and Performance
Power Wiring: 12-125 VDC Powered Type - Connect the DC power to the VDC terminals observing the proper polarity as indicated on the back of the device. Contact the factory for specific application information if the power input to the device is from a positive ground system. High Temperature Switch Wiring - An over temperature condition on channel "0" actuates a normally open, solid state switch in the device. This is accessible through the SWITCH terminals (-) and (+) on the back of the device. The recommended approach is to connect the (-) SWITCH terminal to negative voltage source as shown in the Digital Pyrometer Wiring Diagram. The solid state switch used has an open circuit breakdown voltage rating of 400 volts DC. The output switch will trip if the temperature being monitored on channel "0" exceeds the setpoint value. The switch will also be activated if the thermocouple for channel "0" is not connected or becomes open-circuited.Do not leave the thermocouple input for channel "0" open. Place a jumper across the inputs or connect to a thermocouple. If the high temperature switch will not be used, leave the SWITCH terminals disconnected. Thermocouple Extension Wire - Thermocouple extension wire of the type indicated on the back label of the device must be run from the device thermocouple terminals to each thermocouple sensing source location.Ungrounded thermocouples are recommended where possible. To ensure an accurate signal is transmitted to the device, avoid any added junctions, splices and contact with other metals.Do not to damage the insulation of the thermocouple extension wire during installation. Take precautions against later damage from vibration, abrasion and liquid entering in conduits. It is essential that the following practices be adhered to:* Never run thermocouple wire in the same conduit as high energy wiring such as AC line power, etc.* Keep secondary wires to high voltage wiring away from thermocouples and extension wiring.
Avoid mounting with the LCD display facing direct sunlight. The display temperature range is -40°F to +175°F. The high temperature switch function operates over a range of -40°F to +185°F.
Testing Thermocouple Leads - If it becomes necessary to check thermocouple to terminal-strip wiring with an ohmmeter or other tester, first disconnect the thermocouple from the device. This will prevent possible damage to the device's sensitive low voltage detection circuitry.Wiring Diagram - General - Digital Pyrometer
