Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Determine if a code is active or logged.
Codes
Result: A -16 code is active.
Proceed to Test Step 7.
Result: A -4 or a -12 code is active.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Cycle Power
A. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position for at least 30 seconds.
B. Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position and then look for codes.
Codes
Result: A -12 code is active.
Repair: Replace the auxiliary fuel metering valve.
Result: A -4 code is active.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check Battery Voltage to Auxiliary Metering Valve
A. check the battery voltage at the component.
B. Check valve connector terminals 1 and 2.
Voltage
Result: Battery voltage was found to be less than 18 volts.
Repair: There is a problem with the power supply to the valve.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result:Battery voltage was found to be greater than 18 volts.
Repair: Replace the auxiliary fuel metering valve.
4. Check Battery Voltage at Harness Connector
A. Follow engine harness to the main harness connector.
B. Check for battery voltage at the terminal for the auxiliary fuel metering valve power supply. Refer to schematic for terminal location.
Voltage
Result: Battery voltage was found to be less than 18 volts
Repair: There is a problem with the wiring harness between the auxiliary fuel metering valve connector and auxiliary fuel metering valve relay or problem with the relay.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: Battery voltage was found to be greater than 18 volts.
Repair: There is a problem with the harness between connector and the auxiliary fuel metering valve. Repair or replace the harness.
5. Check Battery Voltage at Relay Output
A. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
B. Check for battery voltage on relay output terminal 14.
Voltage
Result: Battery voltage was found on relay output terminal 14.
Repair: There is a problem with the wiring harness between the relay and connector. Repair or replace the harness.
Result: Battery voltage was less than 18 volts at relay output terminal 14.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
6. Check Battery Voltage at Relay Input
A. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
B. Check for battery voltage at relay input terminal 11.
Voltage
Result: Battery voltage greater than 18 volts was found at relay input terminal 11.
Repair: Replace the relay.
Result: Battery voltage less than 18 volts was found at relay input terminal 11.
Repair: There is a problem with the wiring harness between the relay and batteries or problem with the battery connection.
7. Check for the Existence of Excessive Temperature
A. Confirm that the engine is at normal operating temperature.
B. Measure the surface temperature of the actuator housing near the electrical harness.
Temperature
Result: The temperature reading is greater than 115° C (239° F.).
Repair: Remove external heat source.
Result: The temperature reading is less than 115° C (239° F.).
Repair: The valve has an internal fault. Replace auxiliary fuel metering valve. If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
