Diagnostic Trouble Codes for the Nozzle in the Aftertreatment Regeneration Device (ARD)
Code    Description    Comments
3556-7     Aftertreatment #1 Fuel Injector : Not Responding Properly     The nozzles are restricted. The restriction is caused by one of the following conditions:
Liquid cleaner has not been introduced into the system according to the schedule in the engine's Operation and Maintenance Manual (OMM).
The ARD purge air actuator has failed.
The nozzles are fouled with debris.
Follow the troubleshooting procedure in order to identify the root cause of the problem.    General InformationThe ECM monitors the signals from the fuel pressure sensors for the ARD after the ARD shuts down. A 3556-7 code is activated if the decay time in either pressure is too long. A log decay time indicates that a nozzle is restricted.Test Step 1. Inspect the System
Illustration 1 g01426106
Typical view of the left side of the engineThe routing of the tubing depends on the engine's configuration. (1) Tubing (2) Purge solenoid valve (3) Fitting for checking the purge pressure (4) Check valve (5) Fitting for checking the purge pressureRefer to Illustration 1. Inspect as much of the lines as possible. Look for the following problems:
Loose fittings
Broken linesExpected Result:The lines are OK.Results:
The lines are OK - Proceed to Test Step 2.
The lines are not OK. - Repair: Make the necessary repairs. Proceed to Test Step 2 after the lines have been repaired.Test Step 2. Check the System for Air Flow
Select fitting (3) or (5). You may perform this test at either fitting.
Loosen the selected fitting.
Start the engine.
Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to disable the ARD by setting the value of the "Data Link ARD Disable" parameter to "Disabled". Disabling the ARD causes the ARD purge air actuator to open.
Raise the engine speed to 1200 rpm. This will provide air pressure in the lines.
Spray liquid soap onto the fitting.
Check for bubbles at the fitting.
Stop the engine.
Tighten the fitting.Expected Result:There were bubbles at the fitting. Results:
There were bubbles at the fitting - The ARD purge air actuator is operating correctly. Proceed to Test Step 3.
There were no bubbles at the fitting. - The ARD purge air actuator did not open.Repair: Perform the following procedure:
Replace the ARD purge air actuator.
Check for bubbles again by using the above procedure. Proceed to 3 when there are bubbles at the fitting. Makes sure that the fitting is tight.Test Step 3. Add Liquid Cleaner to the ARD Purge Air System
Start the engine.
Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to disable the ARD by setting the value of the "Data Link ARD Disable" parameter to "Disabled".
Introduce liquid cleaner into the cleaning port.
Increase the engine speed to 1200 rpm. Allow the engine to run at 1200 rpm for five minutes. This will create enough intake manifold air pressure in order to force the liquid cleaner through the nozzles. Results:Continue to the next test step.Test Step 4. Perform a Stationary Regeneration
A 3715-31 code indicates that the DPF contains too much soot. Replace the DPF before clearing this code. If a 3715-31 code is cleared and the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is not replaced, an active regeneration will destroy the DPF.
Click the "Disconnect" icon on Cat ET in order to disconnect Cat ET from the engine.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position. Wait for five seconds.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
Click the "Connect" icon on Cat ET in order to connect Cat ET to the engine.
Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle for three minutes.
Start a stationary regeneration by selecting the following menus on Cat ET:
"Service"
"Service Procedures"
"Manual Diesel Particulate Filter Regeneration"Cat ET will display a "Waiting On Requirements" window. The ECM will automatically elevate the engine speed to 1400 rpm. If the "Waiting On Requirements" window remains displayed for more than five minutes, abort the regeneration. Then, select the menu options again in order to start the stationary regeneration. The duration of the stationary regeneration depends on the soot load in the DPF. The ECM will automatically return the engine speed to low idle after the stationary regeneration is complete.Note: The ECM tests the nozzles for plugging after the stationary regeneration is complete. Approximately ten minutes are required in order for the test to provide a result. A code will become active if the nozzles are plugged. Results:
The stationary regeneration completed successfully. - STOP
The stationary regeneration did not complete successfully. - Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, "ARD Stationary Regeneration Does Not Activate".STOP
