Information:
Prelubrication
The engine prelube system is optional. If the engine has the option, the electronic control module (ECM) will operate the prelube pump under these conditions:
The "ENGINE PRELUBE DURATION" parameter is programmed to a value that is greater than zero.
The engine control switch is turned to the "MAN.START" position. Alternatively, the engine control switch is in the "AUTO" position when the remote start/stop initiate contact closes. The prelube pump will supply oil under pressure to the engine until one of the following conditions occurs:
The oil pressure closes a pressure contactor.
The programmed "ENGINE PRELUBE DURATION" expires.Engine cranking will begin after the prelube pump stops.Automatic Starting
When the engine is in the AUTOMATIC mode, the engine can start at any moment. To avoid personal injury, always remain clear of the the engine when the engine is in the AUTOMATIC mode.
For automatic starting, the engine control switch must be in the AUTO position or in the REMOTE position. The engine will automatically start when the remote start/stop initiate contact closes.Manual Starting
For initial start-up of a new or rebuilt engine, and for start-up of an engine that has been serviced, make provision to shut the engine off should an overspeed occur. This may be accomplished by shutting off the air and/or fuel supply to the engine.
Do not start the engine or move any control if a "DO NOT OPERATE" warning tag or a similar warning tag is attached to any of the controls.Ensure that no one will be endangered before the engine is started and when the engine is started.
Perform all of the procedures that are described in this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Before Starting Engine" topic (Operation Section).
Do not engage the starting motor when flywheel is turning. Do not start the engine under load.If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch or button and wait two minutes to allow the starting motor to cool before attempting to start the engine again.
Ensure that the marine transmission is disengaged (if equipped). Note: If the optional prelube is used, the prelube pump will operate before cranking begins. The ECM will allow the engine to be operated at rated rpm when the oil pressure sensors indicate that the oil pressure is sufficient.Manual Starting with the Marine Power Display Panel (MPD Panel)

(1) "START/STOP" switch
(2) "OFF/LOCAL/REMOTE" switch
Position the "OFF/LOCAL/REMOTE" switch to the LOCAL position or to the REMOTE position.
Turn the "START/STOP" switch to the START position. Note: If the "START/STOP" switch does not start the engine, start the engine with the "CRANK/OVERRIDE" switch on the inside of the control box. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Control Panel (Marine Power Display Control Panel)" article for further information.Manual Starting with the Marine Classification Society Panel (MCS Panel)

(2) "OFF/LOCAL/REMOTE" switch An engine configured with an MCS panel is started with the MCS panel.
Position the "OFF/LOCAL/REMOTE" switch in the LOCAL position.
Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Control Panel (Marine Classification Society Control Panel)" for the starting procedure. Note: If the starting procedure for the "MCS" panel does not start the engine, start the engine with the "CRANK/OVERRIDE" switch which is located on the inside of the control box. Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Control Panel (Marine Classification Society Control Panel)" article for further information.Overcrank
The crank cycle is the amount of time for engagement of the starting motor. The crank cycle also includes the amount of time for cooling of the starting motor between crank cycles. The crank cycle and the number of crank cycles are programmable. If the engine does not start within the number of crank cycles that are programmed, the fuel system is disabled. The "OVERCRANK" indicator will illuminate in order to warn the operator of an overcrank. If an overcrank occurs, the ECM must be reset before starting can be attempted. To reset the ECM, turn the engine control switch to the "OFF/RESET" position.
