Table 2
Component Electrical Checkout
Engine Starter Motor Relay Attempt to start the engine. Once the ECM attempts to energize the relay, the code will become active. Refer to the machine-specific schematic for the "Engine Starter Motor Relay" wiring circuit.
Ether Solenoid Use the "Ether Injection Override" in the override parameters section in Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to activate the ether starting aid solenoid. Review active diagnostic codes to determine what code is present.
Fuel Priming Pump Fuel Priming Command Override Use the "Fuel Priming Command Override" in the override parameters section in Cat ET to activate the engine fuel pump. Review the active diagnostic codes to determine what code is present.
Turbocharger Wastegate Actuator Engine Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid Status Override: Use the "Engine Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid Status Override" in the override parameters section in Cat ET to activate the Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid. To activate the solenoid, turn the override to Off, which turns the air supply to the turbocharger wastegate off. Review active diagnostic codes to determine what code is present.

Part Number Description
372-5260 Test Lead Tool Group Reference: Refer to the Electrical Schematic for the pin outs of the coils.
Table 4
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat ET to the service tool connector.
Codes
Result: There is an active or logged -5 code.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: There is an active or logged -6 code.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
2. Check the Wiring for an Open Circuit
A. Verify that the harness connector is free of debris, free of corrosion, and securely connected.
B. Disconnect the component from the harness.
C. Connect a jumper wire between the terminals of the harness connector for the affected component. The component coil is replaced with a short circuit.
D. Establish communication between Cat ET and the engine ECM. Select the appropriate "Electrical Checkout" from Table 2 above to activate the desired component.
Open Circuit
Result: A -5 code became active during the electrical checkout. The ECM did not detect the jumper wire. There is an open circuit in the wiring between the coil and the ECM connector. There may be a problem with a connector.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or the wiring.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: A -6 code is activated during the electrical checkout. The ECM detected the jumper wire. There is a problem with the component.
Repair: Replace the component.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
3. Check the Wiring for a Short Circuit
A. Disconnect the component from the harness. The component coil is replaced with an open circuit.
B. Establish communication between Cat ET and the engine ECM. Select the appropriate "Electrical Checkout" from Table 2 above to activate the desired component.
Short Circuit
Result: A -6 code became active during the electrical checkout. The ECM did not detect the open circuit. There is a short circuit in the wiring between the coil and the ECM connector. There may be a problem with a connector.
Repair: Repair or replace the connectors or the wiring.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
Result: A -5 code is activated during the electrical checkout. The ECM detected the open circuit. There is a problem with the component.
Repair: Replace the component.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
