Diagnostic Codes Table
J1939 Code and Description    Conditions which Generate this Code    System Response
1442-9
Engine Fuel Valve #1 Position : Abnormal Update Rate     There is a communication issue between the fuel valve and the ECM.     The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is activated.
5418-7
Engine Fuel Actuator #1 : Not Responding Properly     There is a mismatch between the fuel position requested by the command signal and the actual position of the fuel valve. The problem is reported by the fuel actuator.     The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is activated.
5418-12
Engine Fuel Actuator #1 : Failure     The fuel actuator has reported an internal failure.     The code is logged.
The amber warning lamp is activated.

239-5260     Crimp Tool     1
329-5658     Crimp Die Set     1    The fuel actuator is an electronic actuator. The actuator works with the Electronic Control Module (ECM) to ensure the correct fuel position during all engine operating conditions. The ECM modulates the fuel valve from a fully closed position to a fully opened position.CommunicationsThe ECM and the fuel actuator communicate via the CAN data link. The ECM sends a command signal to the actuator. The actuator sends the following information to the ECM: desired actuator position, actual actuator position and internal fault diagnosis. If the ECM cannot communicate with the actuator, the ECM activates a 1442-9 diagnostic code. The problem may be with the power supply to the actuator. This code may be generated for an intermittent problem. After checking the power circuit for the actuator, refer to Troubleshooting, "CAN Data Link - Test" for information that is related to troubleshooting the data link circuitry.Self-diagnostic Function If an internal fault is detected by the actuator, the condition is communicated via the CAN data link. The ECM activates a 5418-12 diagnostic code. The most likely cause of a 5418-12 diagnostic code is an electrical problem or a mechanical problem.

Troubleshooting Test Steps    Values    Results
1. Check for Active Codes and Logged Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Restore electrical power to the ECM.
C. Monitor the diagnostic codes on Cat ET. Check and record any diagnostic codes.
Note: Wait at least 30 seconds in order for the diagnostic codes to become active.
D. Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.

Codes

Result: A code is not active or logged.
Repair: There may be an intermittent problem in the harness or in a connector. If an intermittent problem is suspected, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect".
Result: A 5418-7 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A 5418-12 code is logged.
The actuator may have detected an internal problem with the actuator electronics.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A 5418-12 code is active.
Repair: Replace the fuel actuator.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

2. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
A. Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
B. Thoroughly inspect the ECM connectors. Inspect all of the connectors that are associated with the circuit. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
C. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connectors that are associated with the circuit.
D. Check the allen head screw for each of the ECM connectors for the proper torque. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
E. Check the harness and wiring for abrasion and for pinch points from the actuator back to the ECM.

Connectors and Wiring

Result: The connectors and wiring appear to be OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The connectors and wiring are NOT OK.
Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Ensure that all of the seals are properly in place and ensure that the connectors are coupled.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

3. Check the Ambient Temperature
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Restore electrical power to the ECM.
C. Monitor Cat ET for the temperature reading.

-40° C (-40° F)

Result: The temperature is OK.
Repair: Cycle the power on to the engine.
Place the engine control switch in the stop position and allow sufficient time for the actuator to calibrate.
If one of the codes become active during the calibration attempt, proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The temperature is NOT OK.
Repair: Take the appropriate measures to increase the ambient temperature around the engine.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

4. Check the Valve Mechanism for the Fuel Actuator
A. Remove the valve mechanism from the engine.
B. Check for dirt, debris, and blockage in the piping for the fuel system.

Fuel Actuator

Result: The valve mechanism for the fuel actuator is OK.
Result: The valve mechanism for the fuel actuator is NOT OK.
Repair: Perform any necessary repairs.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
