Information:
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Inspect The Oil Pump
If any part of the oil pump is worn enough in order to affect the performance of the oil pump, the oil pump must be replaced.Perform the following procedures in order to inspect the oil pump. Refer to Specifications, "Engine Oil Pump" for clearances and torques.

Remove the oil pump from the engine. Remove the cover of the oil pump.
Remove the outer rotor. Clean all of the parts. Look for cracks in the metal or other damage.

Measure the end play of the rotor.
Measure the end play of the rotor with a straight edge and a feeler gauge.
Clean the top face of the oil pump and the bottom face of the cover. Install the cover on the oil pump. Install the oil pump on the engine. Engine Oil Cooler
Inspection of a Canister Type Engine Oil Cooler
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Illustration 5 g00659627Perform the following procedure in order to inspect the engine oil cooler:
Place a container under the oil cooler in order to collect any engine oil or coolant that drains from the oil cooler. Remove both of the coolant hoses. Remove threaded adapter (2) that holds the engine oil cooler (1) on the oil filter base.
Inspect washer (3) and seal (4) for wear or damage. If washer (3) or seal (4) is worn or damaged, replace washer (3) and seal (4) with a new part.
Thoroughly clean the mating surface of the filter base and the engine oil cooler.
Lightly lubricate seal (4) with clean engine oil.
Position engine oil cooler (1) on the oil filter base and install threaded adapter (2). Tighten threaded adapter (2) to a torque of 37 N m (27 lb ft).
Install the coolant lines.
Ensure that the cooling system of the engine is filled to the correct level. Ensure that the engine oil level is filled to the correct level. Refer to the Operation And Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for more information. Operate the engine and check for oil leakage or coolant leakage.Problems Of The Lubrication System
Table 1
Required Tools
Part Number Part Description Qty
4C-4890 Hydraulic Test Group 1 The following problems are the most common problems in the lubrication system:
Excessive oil consumption
Low oil pressure
High oil pressure
Excessive wear of componentsExcessive Oil Consumption
Leakage Of Oil Through Seals And Gaskets
Inspect the rear main seal for leakage.
Inspect the oil pan for leakage through the gasket.
Inspect the lubrication system for leakage at all connections.
Inspect the cylinder head for leakage through the gasket. Leakage Of Oil In The Cylinder Head
Leakage of oil in the cylinder head can be the cause of blue smoke. There are four possible causes of leakage of oil into the cylinder head:
Oil leakage between worn valve guides and valve stems.
Piston rings are worn or damaged.
Piston rings are incorrectly installed.
The viscosity of the oil is incorrect.Oil with a low viscosity can be caused by water contamination, fuel contamination, or chemical breakdown of the oil. The chemical breakdown can be caused by these conditions:
An engine that continually overheats
Dirt
Other contaminantsDirt and other contaminants are agents that create a low pH in the oil.Oil with a viscosity which is too low or contamination of the oil by particulate materials increases the wear on all engine parts.Low Oil Pressure
