Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: An E1220 or a 5585 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: An E398, E1106, 157, or a 1440 code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
2. Check the Service History
Note: An E1220 or 5585-17 code can be caused by a recent service on the fuel system. If the high-pressure system was not primed after the last service, this code will log.
A. Prime the fuel system.
B. Connect Cat ET.
C. Clear the fault E1220 or 5585 code.
D. Start the engine.
Codes
Result: An E1220 or a 5585 code became active.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: An E1220 or a 5585 code did not become active.
The high-pressure fuel system was not properly primed.
Proceed to Test Step 12.
3. Perform a "Fuel System Functional Test"
A. Remove the accumulator leak detection plugs.
B. Connect Cat ET.
C. Start the engine.
D. Use Cat ET to perform the following diagnostic test:
- "Fuel System Functional Test".
E. Once the test has completed, turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
F. Wait for 2 minutes to allow the pump diagnostics to run.
G. Connect Cat ET.
H. Use Cat ET to monitor the following:
- Codes
J. Reinstall the accumulator leak detection plugs.
Test
Result: The test was successful and no codes are active.
Return to service.
Result: A 1684 or 1077 code was active after running the test.
Repair: A failed high-pressure fuel pump has been detected. Perform the following procedure:
1. Release the pressure in the high-pressure rail by loosening the end plug on one of the last two fuel accumulators. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Rail Pressure - Release" for instructions on how to release the pressurized fuel.
2. Verify the "Fuel Rail Pressure" reading in Cat ET is 0 8 MPa (0 1160 psi) prior to servicing the fuel system.
3. Replace the high-pressure fuel pump.
Proceed to Test Step 12.
Result: The test failed for an E111F - Fuel Flow Too Low.
Result: A leak was detected from the accumulator leak detection port.
Proceed to Test Step 8.
Result: The test failed for an E111D - Fuel Rail High Pressure Decay Too High
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The test failed for an E111E - Fuel Rail Low Pressure Decay Too High
Proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Verify the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Reading
A. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
B. Release the pressure in the high-pressure rail by loosening the end plug on one of the last two fuel accumulators. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Rail Pressure - Release" for instructions on how to release the pressurized fuel.
C. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.
D. Connect Cat ET.
E. Use Cat ET to monitor the following parameter:
- "Fuel Rail Pressure"
Note: The fuel rail pressure sensor is not reusable. If removed, then the sensor must be replaced.
Sensor
Result: The "Fuel Rail Pressure" is 0 8 MPa (1160 psi).
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The "Fuel Rail Pressure" not 0 8 MPa (1160 psi).
Repair: A failed fuel rail pressure sensor has been detected. Perform the following procedure:
1. Release the pressure in the high-pressure rail by loosening the end plug on one of the last two fuel accumulators. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Rail Pressure - Release" for instructions on how to release the pressurized fuel.
2. Verify
