Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.
Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.

Stop the engine. Connect one end of a hose to each drain valve (2). Insert the other end of the hoses into a suitable container in order to catch the fuel. Note: Each fuel filter contains approximately 19 L (5 US gal) of fuel.
Remove both vent plugs (8). Open both drain valves (2) in order to drain the secondary fuel filters.
Personal injury can result from parts and/or covers under spring pressure.Spring force will be released when covers are removed.Be prepared to hold spring loaded covers as the bolts are loosened.
Gradually loosen but do not remove the last two bolts or nuts that are located at opposite ends of cover (10). Before removing the last two bolts or nuts, pry the cover loose in order to relieve any spring pressure. Remove covers (10) from both fuel filter housings.
Remove O-ring seals (3). Discard the used O-ring seals. Remove spring (5). Remove retainers (4). Remove wire racks (6) and fuel filter elements (7). Discard the used elements.
Clean covers (10) and clean retainers (4). Clean wire racks (6) and clean springs (5).
Inspect new elements (7) for good condition. Install elements (7) and wire racks (6).
Install retainers (4) and springs (5). Install new O-ring seals (3). Install covers (10). Ensure that the spring is seated properly between covers (10) and elements (7).
Close drain valves (2). Clean vent plugs (8). Install the vent plugs loosely. Prime the fuel system. See this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" topic (Maintenance Section).
Start the engine and check for fuel leaks. Replacing the Secondary Filters During Engine Operation
Filter contains hot pressurized fluid when engine is running.Follow instructions on control valve to avoid personal injury. If rapid air movement exists to blow fluid, Stop the engine to avoid fire.

(11) Index plunger Note: Turning the control valve too fast may cause a rapid drop in fuel pressure which could cause the engine to stall.
To service the right secondary fuel filter, turn control valve (1) counterclockwise to the left bank filter while pulling out on the index plunger (11).
Connect one end of a hose to the right bank drain valve (2). Insert the other end of the hose into a suitable container in order to catch the fuel.
