SUBJECT: MISALIGNMENT BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND THE HYDROSTATIC PUMP MAY BE CAUSED BY MISSING FLYWHEEL HOUSING DOWEL PINS
PROBLEM:
Misalignment between the engine and the hydrostatic pump may be caused by dowel pins missing from the flywheel housing. The dowel pins are necessary to correctly locate the flywheel housing to the engine block. As a result of this misalignment, the nylon teeth on the 117-7756 Flange may get stripped by the 141-0666, 193-8342, or 205-4597 Coupling Hub or the 141-0666, 193-8342, or 205-4597 Coupling Hub may slide off the pump shaft.
Failure of the 117-7756 Flange results in the loss of all hydraulic power for 216, 226, 228, 232, 242, 236, 246, and 248 machines. In addition, for 246 and 248 machines, failure of the 117-7756 Flange will cause the engine to shut down upon loss of hydraulic power and to not restart.
SOLUTION:
Anytime there is a failure between the 117-7756 Flange (2) and the 141-0666, 193-8342, or 205-4597 Coupling Hub (4), remove the flywheel (6) and check for the installation of the two dowel pins. Refer to Service Manual Module, SENR5013, "Disassembly and Assembly ? 3034 Engine for Caterpillar Built Machines", "Flywheel-Remove and Install" for detailed instructions. See Illustration 1 and Illustration 2.
If the dowel pins are missing, install two 153-1013 Dowel Pins in order to properly locate the flywheel housing (1) to the engine block. Refer to Service Manual Module, SENR5013, "Disassembly and Assembly ? 3034 Engine for Caterpillar Built Machines", Flywheel Housing-Remove and Install" for detailed instructions.
Note: When reinstalling the flywheel (6), tighten the bolts to 100 ± 5 N×m (74 ± 4 lb ft).
Ensure that the 141-0666, 193-8342, or 205-4597 Coupling Hub (4) is correctly positioned on the spline shaft of the hydrostatic pump (5). Refer to following service manual modules for the instruction in order to correctly install coupling hub (4): Service Manual Module, RENR2857, "216, 226, and 228 Skid Steer Loaders, Disassembly and Assembly ? Power Train", "Piston Pump (Hydrostatic)-Remove and Install"; Service Manual Module, RENR2872, "236, 246, and 248 Skid Steer Loaders, Disassembly and Assembly ? Power Train", "Piston Pump (Hydrostatic)-Remove and Install"; Service Manual Module RENR4834, 216, 226, 232 and 242 Skid Steer Loader Power Train, Disassembly and Assembly, Piston Pump (Hydrostatic); Service Manual Module, RENR4808, 236, 246, 252, and 262 Skid Steer Loaders Power Train, Remove and Install, Piston Pump (Hydrostatic); Service Manual Module, RENR4859, 247 and 257 Multi-Terrain Loaders Power Train, Disassembly and Assembly, Piston Pump (Hydrostatic); Service Manual Module, RENR4815, 267, 277, and 287 Multi-Terrain Loaders Power Train, Disassembly and Assembly, Piston Pump (Hydrostatic).
Note: The face of coupling hub (4) must be installed to a dimension of 65.3 ± 2 mm (2.6 ± 0.08 inch) from the face of the hydrostatic pump (5). See Dimension (A) in Illustration 3.
Also, ensure that a thread lock compound is applied to the threads of the allen head screw (7), and ensure that the allen head screw (7) is tightened to a torque of 55 ± 5 N×m (41 ± 4 lb ft).
