Start By:a. remove flywheel
Any time the crankshaft seal is removed from the wear sleeve, a new sleeve and seal must be installed as a set. If the old seal is put back on the sleeve, the seal will leak.
1. Make at least three holes in seal (1) with a hammer and a sharp punch.2. Use tool (A) to remove seal (1). 3. Install tool (C) in the flywheel housing as shown.4. Install tool (B) between tool (C) and wear sleeve (2). Turn tool (B) until the tool makes a dent (crease) in wear sleeve (2). Do this in three or more places until the wear sleeve is loose.5. Remove tools (B) and (C), and remove wear sleeve (2) from the crankshaft.Install Crankshaft Rear Seal and Wear Sleeve
Serial No. 8GB1-181 1. Install adapter (3) on tooling (A) as shown.
If the crankshaft and wear sleeve come apart during installation, the seal and sleeve become scrap, and a new seal and sleeve as a unit must be used as a replacement.
The rear seal and wear sleeve can not be exchanged with the front seal and wear sleeve. There are grooves in the sealing lip of the seals that direct the oil back into the crankcase as the crankshaft turns. An exchange of front and rear seals can cause the oil to come out of the crankcase.2. Put crankshaft seal (2) and wear sleeve (1) as a unit in position on adapter (3). Make sure the lip of the seal is up as shown. Install the O-ring seal on adapter (3). 3. Install tool (B) over the studs of tooling (A). Install nuts (C), and tighten the nuts evenly until the seal is against the bottom of the adapter bore.4. Remove nuts (C), tool (B) and tooling (A) from the adapter.
Do not put engine oil on the seal during installation. Lubrication of the seal at installation can give a false indication of leakage at a later time.
5. Clean the outer surface of the crankshaft with 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer.6. Put clean engine oil on the O-ring seal, and install the seal on the adapter and put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the outside diameter of the crankshaft and the inside diameter of the wear sleeve. 7. Install tooling (D) on the end of the crankshaft.8. Install guide bolts (E) in the drive housing. Put adapter (3) in position on guide bolts (E) and over tooling (D). Make sure the wear sleeve makes contact with the end of the crankshaft. 9. Install tool (B) over the small outside diameter of tool (F) until tool (B) is against the shoulder on tool (F).10. Install tooling (B) and (F) as a unit on the guide bolts and over locator.11. Put clean engine oil on the face of nut (G) on the locator and install nut (G) on the locator. Tighten nut (G) until the wear sleeve and adaptor are in position.12. Remove the tooling from the engine. 13. Install bolts (4) to hold adapter (3) in position.End By:a. install flywheel Serial No. 8GB182-Up
The crankshaft seal and wear sleeve come as a set and must not be separated from each other at any time. Carefully read Special Instruction, Form No. SMHS8508, that is included with each seal and wear sleeve before any handling of the seal group is made.
1. Use the following procedure to install the crankshaft rear seal and wear sleeve:a. Clean and make a preparation of the wear sleeve inside diameter and crankshaft outside diameter with 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer. Make an application of 9S3265 Retaining Compound to the crankshaft outside diameter before the wear sleeve is installed on the crankshaft. Do not let any Quick Cure Primer or Retaining Compound get on the lip of the seal.b. Install locator (A) and the bolts on the crankshaft.c. The seal and wear sleeve must be installed dry. Make sure the seal is installed with the part number and the arrows showing crankshaft rotation toward the outside.
The front and rear seals and wear sleeves have different spiral grooves in the seal. Because of this type of design, the rear seal group for an engine is different from the front seal group. If a seal group is installed on the wrong side of the engine, oil can actually be taken out of the engine instead of moving the oil back into the engine.
d. Put wear sleeve (2) and seal (1), as a unit, in position on locator (A). e. Put installer (C) in position on locator (A).f. Put clean engine oil on the face of nut (D) and its contact area on installer (C). Install nut (D) on locator (A).g. Tighten nut (D) until installer (C) makes contact with locator (A).h. Remove the tooling from the crankshaft.End By:a. install flywheel
