Test Step 1. Check for Connector Damage.
Turn the circuit breaker for the engine to the OFF position.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the connectors J1/P1 and J2/P2 of the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Inspect all of the other connectors. Refer to the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque of 6.0 N m (55 lb in).
Check the customer connector (allen head screw) for the proper torque of 2.25 0.25 N m (20 2 lb in).
Check the harness and the wiring for abrasion and for pinch points.Expected Result:The connectors and wiring should be free of the following problems: damage, abrasion, corrosion and incorrect attachments. Results:
OK - The connectors and wiring are okay. Proceed to test step 2.
Not OK - The connectors and/or wiring are not okay.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Stop.Test Step 2. Check the Switch on the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET).
Connect the Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine should be OFF.
Observe the status of the throttle switch on the Cat ET.
Move the throttle switch to each position.Expected Result:When the throttle switch is in the CENTER position, the "Throttle Input #1" and the "Throttle Input #3" should indicate "OFF". The "Throttle Input #2" and the "Throttle Input #4" should indicate "ON".When the throttle switch is in the Low Idle Position position, the "Throttle Input #1" and the "Throttle Input #2" should indicate "ON". The "Throttle Input #3" and the "Throttle Input #4" should indicate "OFF".When the throttle switch is in the High Idle position, the "Throttle Input #1" and the "Throttle Input #2" should indicate "OFF". The "Throttle Input #3" and the "Throttle Input #4" should indicate "ON".Results:
OK - The throttle switch is functioning properly at this time.Repair: The problem may be intermittent. If the problem is intermittent, perform the diagnostic functional test Troubleshooting, "Inspecting Electrical Connectors". Stop.
Not OK - Record the suspect input. Proceed to test step 3.Test Step 3. Create a Short at the Throttle Switch.
Disconnect the throttle switch.
Observe the suspect throttle on the Cat ET.
Use a suitable piece of wire to short between terminal 2 and the suspect terminal on the throttle switch.
Observe the status of the throttle switch on the Cat ET.
Move the side of the wire short from terminal 2 to terminal 5.
Observe the status of the throttle switch on the Cat ET.
Remove all jumpers.Expected Result:The status of the throttle switch should read "OFF" when the wire short is disconnected. The status of the throttle switch should read "ON" when the wire short is installed. Results:
OK - The harness and the ECM are okay.Repair: Replace the throttle switch. Stop.
Not OK - The ECM did not read the change in throttle positions. Proceed to test step 4.Test Step 4. Check for Shorts in the Wiring Harness.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect ECM connector J1/P1.
Note the location of the wires on the terminals of the throttle switch. Remove the wires from the throttle switch.
Measure the resistance between the wires and chassis ground.
Measure the resistance between the wires.Expected Result:The resistance should be greater than 20,000 Ohms for each reading. Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 20,000 Ohms for each reading. Proceed to test step 5.
Not OK - The resistance is less than 20,000 Ohms for each reading. There is a short in the harness between the ECM and the Throttle Switch.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Stop.Test Step 5. Check the Resistance through the Harness.
Use a suitable piece of wire to short the suspect terminal and terminal 5.
Measure the resistance between P1-29 and the suspect throttle input at the ECM.
Use a suitable piece of wire to short the suspect terminal and terminal 2.
Measure the resistance between P1-29 and the suspect throttle input at the ECM.Expected Result:The resistance should be less than 10 Ohms. Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 10 Ohms. Proceed to test step 6.
Not OK - The resistance is more than 10 Ohms. There is an open circuit or excessive resistance in the harness.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Stop.Test Step 6. Check the Harness and the ECM.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Disconnect ECM connector J1/P1 and remove the suspect wire from the ECM connector P1. Install a wire jumper with a terminal at each end into the socket for the suspect wire.
Remove wire 998-BR from P1-29. Install a wire jumper with a terminal at each end into the socket for P1-29.Note: Additional diagnostic codes will be generated because the Digital Return will no longer be connected to other sensors and switches. Ignore the codes and clear the codes when you complete this test.
Reconnect ECM connector J1/P1.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine should be OFF.
Observe the status of the throttle switch on the Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Short the two wire jumpers together.
Reconnect all connectors.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. The engine should be OFF.Note: Additional diagnostic codes will be generated because the Digital Return will no longer be connected to other sensors and switches. Ignore the codes and clear the codes when you complete this test.
Observe the status of the throttle switch on the Cat ET.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.
Remove the wire jumpers from P1. Replace all wires. Reconnect all connectors.Expected Result:The status of the throttle switch should read "OFF" when the wire short is not installed. The status of the throttle switch should read "ON" when the wire short is installed. Results:
OK - The ECM read the changes in the throttle inputs. There is a problem in the harness between the ECM and the throttle switch.Repair: Repair the connectors or wiring and/or replace the connectors or wiring. Stop.
Not OK - The ECM did not read the changes in the throttle inputs. The ECM
