Information:

Typical Example1. Remove eight nuts (1). Remove cover (2) from the timing gear cover.
Typical Example2. Remove bolts (3), and remove governor and fuel pump drive (4).
Typical Example3. Remove gear (5) from the front timing gear cover. The following steps are for the installation of the governor and fuel pump drive. 4. Lubricate seals (6) with clean engine oil.
Typical Example5. Put gear (5) in position in the front timing gear cover. 6. Install 3/8 in - 16 NC x 6 in. (152.4 mm) long guide bolts (7) in gear (5) as shown. 7. Install governor and fuel pump drive (4) on the end of the fuel injection pump camshaft, and install bolts that hold it. Tighten bolts to a torque of 3 N m (27 lb in). 8. Put the No. 1 piston at top center on the compression stroke. Make reference to Finding Top Center Compression Position For No. 1 Piston in Testing And Adjusting. Remove the timing bolt from the flywheel, and use tool (A) to rotate the crankshaft clockwise (opposite the direction of engine rotation) 45°. 9. Remove plug (8) from the fuel injection pump housing. 10. Install tool (B) in the injection pump housing as shown. Slowly rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise (direction of engine rotation) until the timing pin goes into the slot in the fuel injection pump camshaft.
Too much pressure on the timing pin can damage the fuel injection pump or the timing pin.
11. Put timing bolt in the timing hole in the flywheel housing. Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise (as seen from the flywheel end of the engine) until the fuel pump camshaft is tight against tool (B). This removes gear clearance from the drive train. If the bolt can be installed in the timing hole in the flywheel, the timing of the fuel injection pump is correct.12. If the timing bolt does not go into the timing hole in the flywheel, the timing is not correct. Do the steps that follow to adjust the fuel injection pump timing.a. Loosen four bolts (3). With tool (B) installed and the timing bolt removed, turn the flywheel clockwise (opposite the direction of engine rotation) a minimum of 45°. The reason for this step is to remove backlash from the timing gears when the engine is put on top center (TC).b. Tighten two bolts (3) 180° apart, evenly to a torque of 3 N m (27 lb in).c. Turn the flywheel slowly in the direction of engine rotation until the timing bolt can be installed in the flywheel. The No. 1 piston of the engine is now at top center (TC).d. Tighten four bolts (3) to a torque of 55 7 N m (41 5 lb ft). Remove the timing bolt from the flywheel and tool (B) from the fuel injection pump housing.13. Turn the flywheel clockwise (opposite the direction of normal engine rotation) a minimum of 45°. Now, turn the flywheel in the direction of engine rotation until tool (B) drops into slot of pump camshaft. Now, turn the flywheel more, in the direction of normal engine rotation, until all gear clearance is removed from the drive train. Check to see if the timing bolt will go into the flywheel.14. If the timing is not correct, do the procedures in Steps 12a through 12d again. 15. If the timing is correct, remove the timing bolt from the flywheel and the timing pin [tool (B)] from the fuel injection pump housing. Install cover (2) and the plug in fuel injection pump housing.Disassemble & Assemble Governor & Fuel Pump Drive
Start By:a. remove governor and fuel pump drive 1. Remove seal (2) and seal (4) from the body.
Spring force is present behind carrier (3). Put downward pressure on carrier (3) when bolts are removed.
2. Remove the bolts that hold carrier (8) and ring (9) to ring (23). Remove ring (9 and carrier (8) from ring (23).3. Remove spring (14) and spring (19) from retainer assembly (11).4. Remove locknut (15), setscrew (17), and screw (16) from the retainer assembly.5. Remove ring (9) from carrier (8). Remove seal (1) from the carrier.6. Remove bolts (12) and carrier (22) from carrier (8).7. Remove lockring (10) and body (6) from carrier (8).8. Install two 3/8 in - 16 NC bolts into body (6). Clamp the bolt heads in a vise and remove plug (5) from the body.9. Remove race (7) and ring (13) from spool (3). Remove spool (3) from carrier (22).10. Remove dowels (21) and flyweights (20) from carrier (22). The following steps are for the assembly of the governor and fuel pump drive.11. Put flyweights (20) in position on carrier (22) and install dowels (21) that hold the flyweights in position.12. Put spool (3) in position on carrier (22), and install ring (13) and race (7) on the end of the spool.13. Install two 3/8 in - 16 NC bolts into body (6). Clamp the bolt heads in a vise and install plug (5). Tighten the plug to a torque of 70 15 N m (50 11 lb ft).14. Install body (6) into carrier (8) and install lockring (10).15. Put 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer on the threads of the bolts that hold carrier (22) in place on carrier (22) and let it dry. Put 9S3263 Thread Lock on the threads of the bolts.16. Put carrier (22) in position on carrier (8) and install bolts (12) that hold it in place.17. Install seal (1) on carrier (8). Put clean engine oil on the seals and install ring (9) on carrier (8).18. Install setscrew (17) and locknut (18). Install screw (16) and locknut (15) into retainer assembly (11). Tighten locknut (15) to a torque 70 15 N m (50 10 lb ft).19. Put spring (14) and spring (19 in retainer assembly. Put ring (9) and carrier (8) in position on ring (23). Make sure that the small spring fits over the end of the spool in the carrier assembly.20. Use two 3/8 in - 16 NC x
